Here is my repair/setup guy(if that is what you are looking for). Good work. Reasonable prices.

What are you specifically looking for?

And, not to disparage anyone, but I wouldn't go to/use Geoff Benges. I've had two bad experiences, a simple adjustment/set-up on a high-end acoustic when he was w/ Chicago Music Exchange and a repair of a very valuable vintage electric. I know, didn't I learn the first time!? Well no, I didn't, because in the first instance I chose to not do the work, in the second situation, I was cajoled by a friend and vintage expert who promised me Geoff's less than cordial disposition was no indication of his work. Wrong on both counts, just my humble opinion, but shoddy work, no follow-up and over-priced!

I lived in Chicago for many years, know many musicians/dealers/traders/etc. and have had many experiences with acoustics and electrics. Let me know the specifics and I'll, at least, give you some folks to check-out.

Cheers,

Trow

When I lived in Chicago, I got my repair work done at The Guitar Works in Evanston. Terry Straker is the owner and does many of the repairs himself.

The guys at Chicago Fret Works are great to work with! I would highly recommend them. Very friendly and very knowledgeable when it comes to acoustic guitars.

I always found his prices to be cheaper than most but I never had any major construction work done. Set-ups and minor tweaks only. He can be a little gruff, that is true. Maybe he got extra points from me since his shop was two blocks away from my house. Anyway, no bad experiences on my end.

I live in Evanston, and used to take all my acoustic set up work to Guitar Works. Terry does especially nice work, when he does it. But it seemed like he only worked on very detailed jobs (finish work, repairing cracks, etc.) and my standard set up work started being done by younger guys. It was OK. Not bad, but it took a long time, and usually needed to be adjusted once I picked the guitar up.

I then found Jim Craig at Hogeye Music. He is aces on set up work. Does it all himself, does it lightning fast, or he will tell you to hold onto the guitar until he can get to it fast (which I appreciate).

His work is always top notch, never needed any "adjusting" and is cheaper than GW. I have taken everything to him over the last 3 years. I would recommend him without hesitation.

I am reviving this thread. I have been lazy and putting off several jobs and now I have 4 guitars that need attention from basic setup to some larger work. Any thoughts?

Chicago fret works, third coast, the guitar works in Evanston all gave a good rep. Hogeye seems very popular with the folk crowd.
