Default Collings

Well, got to stop by what, in my opinion, may be the best little guitar shop in the south-east yesterday (Fretted Instruments in Birmingham, AL). While there I had the privilege of playing a number of really nice guitars. The three that really stood out for me were all Collings: a new sunburst SJ (rosewood), a used SJ (also rosewood) and a 000 12 fret sunburst with a slotted head stock that was just beyond cool looking. Those three guitars had the playability that Taylor is legendary for and tone that would give most any guitar a run for the money. They were probably the best "all around" guitars I've ever played (meaning they'd be well suited for many different playing styles, from bluegrass to sweet fingerstyle stuff).

Also got to play a really nice OM-2H, a 714 ES, and a JDCM (yes, they have one in stock).

Just thought I'd share.

Trey,

I agree about Collings.
I recently played, for the first time, a Collings 2001 - D2H
at Acoustic Roots in Pa. and was really impressed.

Collings are great guitars. At the NAMM show I played everything I could get my hands on. Taylors are great guitars. The other guitars that stood out were:

Collings - Everything Martin Should be.
Goodall - Great look & great sound.
Avalon/Lowden - The highest level of craftsmanship and the Loudest guitars there. I scared my wife when I cranked out a G chord. Cannon!

Cool - can you take pics and post them here?

Oh, and freestyle, the factory is in Texas.

I played a pair of Goodalls while there as well. They were both koa, and both sweet. There was just something about that sunburst SJ though . . .

Had an opportunity to play used Collings, fairly high end, at my local GC and was disappointed, kind of dead on 5th and 6th, but I'm looking forward to my next opportunity. I also had an opportunity to play a used low-end mahogony/sitka Lowden recently at my local Sam Ash, an even more disappointing experience, very thin sound.

One thing I like about Collings guitars is the fact that they never stooped so low as to release signature guitars for unpatriotic musicians like sheryl crow! Too bad gibson can't make the same claim.

Well, looks like I have a buddy that wants to buy my NS72, so . . .

If I sold my 414 as well, I'd have enough cash on hand to pick up one of the CJs or the 000 . . .

Getting really tempted here, might just have to go for it. Any thoughts?
