Default Okay, It's Dry

Let's face it Winter comes every year. With Winter comes heat and with heat comes drier RH levels in our homes. Everyone who is concerned about humidifying their instruments, knows this. Additionally, there are hundreds of threads about humidifying guitars, and it doesn't change annually (do a search). Get a hygrometer (or two) and check daily. If it drops, go to your drawer or box, grab your soap dish/sponge or patiently waiting Humidipak and case your beast. Let's not wait until mid-Winter to start panicking about humidity. Now that it's 1:38 EST half of you make a margarita and play your guitars.

I always defer to the manufacturer's recommendations - 45% - 55%. However, I don't stress over 30 and above for up to a week. I just check the weather and compare my indoor/outdoor weather station daily for reference. But here in CO it's always dry .... or dryer.

I don't stress too much about it. Today it's around 55% outside and around 50 indoors as I had the windows open last night. Guitar's are cased (for protection mostly) and Humidipaks at the ready. I have a few hygrometers but....... no weather station. Just KROQ on speed-dial.

Added: I watch to keep them around the DS mentioned range of 40-50 percent. I like the tone on the slightly drier end of the range.

You must have a better weather person than I do. I'm not expecting rain until next week............ subject to change.

Did you just start a thread about humidification telling us to stop starting threads about humidification?

I have all five of my guitars in the bedroom with two humidifiers going. It's about 37% humidity. Elsewhere in the house it's about 25%. Will I be OK for a week or so?

I’m stuck at 35% this week. Got down to 10 deg here in SC last night. I will remove the humidifiers from the cases once we get back up to 40%.

I'm guessing South Carolina--the REAL SC.

I have a humidifier built into my heating system for the 1st floor and basement, and a 7 gallon portable unit for the entire 2nd floor (where I keep my guitars cased) that's been running 24/7 and struggling to keep humidity at 40% in this deep freeze. Fortunately, the humidity gauges inside my guitar cases are all 48%+ so still working off the excess from before this cold/dry spell. Guitars sound better a little drier too.
