Build thread..mahog bomb with a cedar top
My old buddy Paul wanted another LOUD guitar with a little different tonal response than the honduras euro guitar I made for him last year. So this year we are going with Mahogany and Western Red Cedar which will have the same body shape/size as his previous guitar but with a shorter scale length.
So the body is mahog, top WRC, binding and bevels in curly Koa, neck Spanish cedar loaded up with carbon fiber and no truss rod, and elevated so that the extension does not touch the top. The internal heel block will be braced off using carbon fiber rods so that the top does not support the neck in any way and can be made lighter and more resonant in the upper bout. Massive bevels for both arm rest and rib rest. (The biggest ribrest you probably will ever seen on a guitar). Paul wants this guitar really comfortable and light and easy to play. Paul plays out a lot, several hours nearly every day so comfort is important A partial cast of characters

Yay!
Thank You John! Your guitars are SO FINE!!!
And thank you Tim, for showing JK your CF strut design! John did not mention the HOT ROD FLAMES, hand painted on the upper strut, which will only be visible through the sound port to the driver. Haha. I am sure they will make it extra fun. I do not play out quite as much as John says... in 2015 I had 270 gigs, but last year it plummeted to only 264! And most are only one hour long. Fortunately I can usually stack two or sometimes three in a day. That saves a ton of driving, and yields more smiles per mile! Now that I am old enough to retire I have lots of work. Now to get it to pay a living wage... good luck there, huh? Everyone play the good ones! Cheers Paul

I like them too Tim. These wood combos have a nice woody sound. Hard to describe but very different from rosewood of course and very nice. Just a different tonal spectrum.

I haven't heard a guitar called a "bomb" before this. Is that as in "da bomb?" Or is it a cannon, but more omnidirectional in its projection? Like a "fruit bomb" wine, only a guitar? Maybe a de-tone-ation?
Whichever, I'm sure Paul will have a blast working with John on it.

The Bomb
The Bomb. That may need to be this beast's name...
Yes, Howard. JK is a LOT of fun to work with. I love the fact that he likes every guitar to be different. I am pretty traditional in my tastes, but I have asked for a number of non traditional features to make it lighter, louder, warmer, and more playable. Still, I tend to opt for symmetry, and "normal" appearance, bevels, ports, etc. aside. John has been very accommodating and enthusiastic about many of my requests, and has talked me out of a couple that were not as well thought out, too! He is fun to talk with on the phone, and I do hope to meet him and his wife someday... BTW, Howard, I really enjoyed your Wabi-Sabi thread! What a cool bunch of guitarist/philosophers we have here on AGF Cheers Paul

John, in all my travels so far I'm yet to find a guitar of yours that is a "bomb" like the Plymouth. Just the opposite. Your guitars combined with Paul's playing...a match made in heaven!

Bombs away...
Thanks Steve, and cigar Fan! It is going to be another LOOKER!!! But playing it will be even better...
Mike/Woody. You are very kind in your assessment of my playing. I am always very glad I have good strong pipes for singing and can honk the harmonica without thinking about it. It helps that I was a singing drummer for so long, so I can foot stomp too! Remember that three or four simple things together can sound quite complicated! (My salvation on stage) And you are sure right about John's guitars! Man, they just knock my socks off every time I pick them up! And they look fantastic hanging around the house, too!!! Cheers Play on gang

Thanks guys. I appreciate the kind remarks.
So here are the sides and the lining. I skipped the part where I laminated the sides with a maple veneer, and glued in the blocks. (The head block is also veneered with maple, and the tail block is veneered with padouk (dont ask me why)). I'm going to insert some support rods soon When i do a project that requires gluing in a lot of lining as this project requires, i shape the lining after it has been glued in. As in this next picture

Dang it Tom. I asked you not to ask. FYI, I had some padouk veneer on the bench just lying around and decided to purtify the tail block.
