A D35, perhaps?

What's the issue with the Grover Rotomatics. Is this just a style issue for some or is there a Functionality issue folks have with them.

Style and weight. The Rotomatics are entirely too heavy!

It seems Martin is moving to Schaler open backs on style 28 and 40s. Awesome, I have those on my OM/PW. They are smooth and not as stiff as new Waverlies can sometimes be.

Similar reaction from me. Although, it’s mostly a feel thing and shape. For instance, I don’t mind the heavy Gotoh 510s. But, I never cared for Rotomatics. I like Grover open backs 18:1. Schaller open backs are great. I have them on some of my guitars. They are a step above Grover 18:1 and on par with Waverly. In all fairness, most of the better open back tuners are roughly equivalent. There aren’t that many variables.

Not looking to derail this thread but does the added weight really have n effect on the sound. If yes, is this opinion or fact. Been tossing the idea of a D-35 or a D-28. I like the fact that the neck/'nut with is changing on the D-35. It was an issue for me.

I never liked the bulky look of the Rotomatics. Always looked misplaced to my eyes.

Someone please help me get a handle on this. Tell me if I'm correct:

My 2015 D-18: Forward shifted AND scalloped bracing
My 1982 HD-28: Just scalloped; not forward shifted.
"NEW" HD-28: Forward shifted AND scalloped (just like the D-18).

Is that right? So not only does then "new" HD-28 have cool-looking cosmetic upgrades, it's also been tweaked under the hood? So it not only has the "upgrade" of scalloped bracing (which it's had since 1976) it now shifts the braces forward?

I think I just worked all that out in my mind, but someone please double check my math on all that.

P.S. The new D-28 has forward shifted bracing but it's not scalloped, right? I'll catch on one of these days.

You are correct.

My understanding is that the difference in sustain and tone caused by tuner changes can be, and has been, measured. Some might even claim to hear it. I wouldn’t let tuners enter into your calculation. Gotoh makes a awesome drop in open back tuner replacement for Rotomatics. They are $100. They work great. Buy the guitar you like the best. Install the tuners you like the best.

Wear a tie. Preferably not a Taylor Guitars tie.

I'll be honest... with me, it is 100% about style. The weight difference never was an issue on the killer HD-28 I once owned several years back.

But the vintage look is in. Do you still wear Mom jeans ? Nope, make mine a pair of Paige or Sevens please.

Speaking of jeans--I went shopping for some last week. Did you know it's impossible to find skinny jeans in a size 40?
