The back went onto "Dread Lightning" a few minutes ago, one of the milestones in my process. I took a picture that explains the repair method somewhat, and another of the label with the lights only caution.

Bruce, thanks for sharing the "ooops" and the fix with us. It's encouraging for a fledgling builder like myself to see a master such as yourself encounter a problem and develop a solution. Beautifully done, sir! And glad you got to get out in the sun and enjoy it!

I completed the woodwork on D. Lightning today and have started the finishing process. I will use a darker than typical pore filler as the "Lightning Bolt" is a bit darker than the rest of the mahogany, and while i cannot hide it, I can make it blend in better. I'll show you what it looks like when I've done my best with it. The binding is Jatoba. These 3 pics are with sealer, and before pore filler:

Although visible, the lightning strike no longer catches the eye, which is as good as it gets for this kind of "tragedy". The "spots" that appear on both the sides and the back appear to be bearclaw. I have never previously seen this affect in mahogany.
The back w/porefiller and no finish: And the back with its first coat of oil varnish: And the "Lightning Strike". If you're checking in late, "Lightning Strike" refers to the evidence of the repair I had to do after breaking the side clean in half in the bender. The wood seemed too nice to toss into the chipper. |

Beautiful wood!
You are correct, Bruce
That wood is WAY too nice to toss. If you hadn’t showed the boo-boo I would not have even realized it was one. Super pretty stuff Cheers Paul

I agree with Paul- if you’d not show us we’d never have noticed. That mahogany is simply gorgeous!

Today I put the 5th coat on Dread Lightning. I offer you a picture of the top at 4 coats, and of the headstock, which has a Bocote' face on it.
I made this shot upside-down in the finish room, so it suffered a bit. I'll do another better one at some point, most likely. |

I really like that headplate. Really classy!

I too love the Bocote' headstock on D. Lightning, and here is a better representation of it:

To me, Bocote is wood that just looks like it was grown to be used on guitars. When I think of generic brown guitar wood it looks like Bocote in my mind..

What a lovely guitar. It’s a rarity being able to say, “Look at that KOA!” while you’re looking at the top.

This picture is yesterday, and today I have played the Cambodian JB-15-WRX. More about that tomorrow or so.
