You're not too old.
My advice to add to what others have said is to try to find people to play with. If that is not possible, play along to recorded music. This is the single biggest boost you can give yourself. It's worth doing even before your technique is up to it. Just try to pick out single notes that fit with what's being played. It will develop your ear and your sub-conscious awareness of notes on the fretboard. Even 10 - 15 minutes a day will make a huge difference. And presumably you are a music lover so it's no real chore to listen to music you like.
