Default Any tips for commissioning an 0 or 00 model

Talking to a builder from my last guitar for a while it either a 0 or 00

I prefer big and bassy sound but thinking to do a couch sized small guitar, Most likely Adi/ mahog combo.

To complement a 12fret dred rosewood, another all mahog

2 OM's one adi/ madi, the other baked sitka/indian rosewood.

Most short scale.

Trying to get something a bit different in this build

Any suggestions?
Thanks!!

I would think about going with a softer spruce like Engelmann to get more warmth out of the small body.

No rule says you can't have the body built with a bit more depth than 0 or 00 sizes might ordinarily have. That would give you more 'bass' sound

I suggest contacting Michel Aboudib, biggest bass in town for a small guitar.

Physics - get a big guitar if you want big bass. If big bass is what you like, you are likely to be disappointed with a small guitar. Give the luthier a chance to please you. Give yourself a chance to be pleased with what the luthier can build for you.

OP here, No budget - This is my 3d build with this builder, I can get whatever I want, I have the big guitars covered, from other builds, Martins, Eastman, Rainsong.

Looking to do a small guitar O 0r OO size with a big sound, the woods and any one with experience in a small custom build would be helpful. This is specifically for a couch, bedroom guitar, easy to grab and play, always out ready to practice kind of thing.

12 or 14 fret? cutaway, tops and side wood, sound port?

Thanks the comments so far.

You might consider a 12 fret body with a 13 fret neck attachment and increasing the body depth to 4.5”. This will give you everything you want. Of course you’ll want to discuss this with your builder and get their input. Good luck!

I have a 12 fret 00 body, with a 13th fret neck join, long scale, standard 4 1/8" body depth. It's a wonderful design. I'd trust Jimmy and also go with the deeper body for what you want in the bass.

I recently got back in trade one of my well regarded BRW/Adi single 0's. It is long scale (Transformational on a "little" guitar), and has the power and balance of a full sized guitar. Comes in a Calton and has a very expensive (forgot the name) and effective PU in it. You can see it, and others, on my Shop Inventory Page.

Sorry, missed the part about already having the builder lined up!

My most recent build was a spruce koa 00 with a deeper body. For a small guitar it has oodles of bass. And for me the sound port is a welcome addition. Double sides too, to add to the sound. All three components of the guitar were things that the builder had experience with. If you want more information, the build thread is here: https://www.acousticguitarforum.com/...d.php?t=544744

Have to agree. The 00 he had at BIG had some bass. It was impressive.

From the OP’s posts, it seems the builder is already lined up—he’s just looking for ideas (which I would’ve looked to the builder for). That said, I would skip the builder and buy either Michel’s 00 or the 0 Sexauer!

You might consider pointing your builder to THIS topic. It includes the specifics as well as the full construction drawing for a "slightly larger than 0" 14 fret mahogany that I built a few years back specifically looking for the type of sound that you seem to be looking for. I started with a list of what I considered the "perfect guitar" would have and worked toward those specifications.

There's a short example video in the topic as well. This guitar exceeded my expectations and has lots of full bottom tone. It's a bit of a mystery to me why it sounds as good as it does, but I'm happy to accept it.

It works fine for the couch, but it's truly my jack of all trades instrument. It has a K&K Pure Mini pickup and I've been gigging it fairly regularly. It was inexpensive to build and part of my desire to play something that I wasn't afraid to take out. If it gets a few dents I don't mind so much. I put my first small dent in the top a couple of months after finishing it.
