Default Wildflowers-Tom Petty

I don't do too many videos...but I wanted something I could do a quick-guitar/vocal videos with. I bought a $25 Saramonic Smart Rig2 I heard about from Rudy4 (thanks Rudy).

I pointed a Sennheiser 935 halfway between my guitar and me, plugged the mic into the Saramonic thing and plugged that into my android phone and came up with this. It's not a bad preamp/interface. One take, nothing fancy...
What do ya think sound quality wise?

Very well done! Love the song and you do it justice... guitar sounds great and your vocals blend nicely. You have a bit of TP in your timbre

Sounds great Joe. Played well and sung better than well. That album was such a songwriting tour de force.

Well done, especially the vocals. Guitar was well played but I wasn't crazy about its tone -- not enough bass.

Thanks so much GITM and Ray. I appreciate your thoughts!

And yes Ray, that is perfect description for that album.

Thanks DC, appreciate your comments. I agree with the not enough bass. It ws a balancing act of getting both the vocal and guitar, and since the mic wasn't just on the guitar, it has a bit more high end.

Hi Joe,

I think you did an excellent job! If you add other instruments to the mix then the "low bass" wouldn't be a problem. This all comes along with practicing the craft of being a home recordist, and I think you're well on your way! I think the balance issue was very well handled, and it's doubtful to me that you could improve on the mono track.

It doesn't hurt to pick a true tour de force like Wildflowers, of course. I think it's one of Petty's top works, for sure.

Hi Joe,

Wow, that was very well done! You sound good, your video looks good, and you did a great job with minimal equipment!

And a fun Tom Petty song, too, one which I have always liked! And I actually think you sound better than Tom Petty.

Regarding not enough bass in the guitar, I think you are correct about the mic placement thing. You can only do so much with one mic and getting the vocals up front is most important in a song where both guitar and singing are involved. So I think you did about as well as could be done with only one microphone.

Very cool, Joe! That was awesome!

- Glenn

Fantastic cover. Guitar and vocals were so crisp and clean and you’ve got the Tom Petty groove down especially with your singing.

Joe Ricc with the perfect Vox. EXCELLENT cover….

Wildflowers is in my top 5 of all time.

You should post more brother. We all deserve to hear the same great play and vocals that Belmar and the NJ shore get to regularly hear.
