Default PU for 12 String

Just purchased a Taylor GA3 12 string and I’m looking for an easy to install pick-up, perhaps sound hole mounted.

I have installed K&K Minis in every guitar that has passed through my hands for the past 10 years but I think id like to do something simpler this time.

Any recommendations?

Smile Me too

I just scored a NICE 1995 LKSM 12. I, too have K&K minis in almost all my guitars.

Thinking about a soundhole pup myself. I need something that does not make a bunch of noise when accidentally hit with my thumbpick, as I often pick at the top of the soundhole to fatten up the tone.

I expect folks here will have some great suggestions

Cheers

Paul

I've used a Fishman Blackstack on my 12 string and it worked fine. Well balanced and to my ear a great sound. Very easy to install, can be accomplished without slacking the strings.

I try to make Baggs M80 work on a 12 string. I had some sucess mismatching string gauges of standard and octave strings, by using octave strings one size lower. I want to try GHS White Zebra strings, as they're supposed to be more magnetic than other strings for acoustocs.

I’m happy with a Fishman Rare Earth Blend.

I installed a K&K Double Helix in my buddy's Larrivee 12-string, paired with a K&K internal mic. Last week he told me to remove the mic because he is happy with the sound hole PU alone.
I had a Fishman Rare Earth in my Guild 12-string for a few years and liked it very much.

I usually install K&K Pure Westerns in my six-string guitars but used Baggs M1 soundhole pickups on 12-string guitars. I used to do a lot of Kottke tunes, tuned down three half-steps. I always liked the rumbling Kottkesque wall-of-sound and the Baggs always delivered. If you like an ethereal sound I would recommend staying away from magnetic pickups.

The Fishman rare earth blend has a microphone internally. Not the best location but give enough air to the sound. I tend to blend mine guitar just a tad past center dent to mag PU.

Hi S-56…
The KK Pure 12 string pickup (formally known as the K&K Pure Western) is the larger sensor (15mm) version of the Pure Mini (12.5mm). It was called the 'Pure Western' a decade and a half ago (before they reduced the size of it). It is particularly great sounding with the overall acoustic profile of most acoustic 12 string guitars. Also the bridge plate on 12 strings are typically large enough to accommodate it.

It was way-y-y too bassy for 6 string use, but perfect for 12 strings - because 12 string guitars are traditionally overly trebly with underpowered bass.

The JJB have a sensor that size too. The Prestige has 15mm sensors (as opposed to the 12.5mm of the K&K Pure Mini). These pickup more bass and display less treble.

I heard you when you said you want something simpler to install. If having a pickup which sounds acoustic as opposed to electronic is your goal, a sound board transducer is the answer.

I don't find other types/styles of pickups deal well acoustically with the 12 string 'sound' (they tend to make it electronic sounding). And yes, SBT (sound board transducers) are a pain to install, but they just have an edge (actually lack 'edge') over the other styles of pickups…except the magnetic pickups…which sound very 'electric'.

Just the opinion of an older fella who's been around the block a few times…

All of my acoustics have K&K pups including my beloved 1971 Guild F-312NT. Love 'em!

Smile K&K for 12s

I succumbed to the allure of a NOS K&K here on the AGF…

It is one of the oversized models made for 12 string. I didn’t even know they existed…. Ah the joys of this forum!

This 12 string model supposedly yields more Bass. So I am hoping for the amplified RUMBLE of a LKSM 12 !

I will try to report back when Tim Luranc gets it installed.

Fingers crossed

Paul

standard K&K Pure Mini here for me seems to work fine using Baggs DI for EQ.

IMHO it's worth going the K&K route. My 12-string Martin sounds great with its K&K. As others have pointed out, be sure to get the 12-string version of the pickup.

A few months on but can you tell me/us which K&K model and the results? I am looking at the K&K Sound Pure 12-String Pickup for my Martin. Specifically, how is the evenness? Thanks
