I got a new D-18 and an older (1982) HD-28 last year. I figured between those 2 I had things covered. Now they've gone and improved everything. Now what?

Finding your checkbook would be a good place to start! I'm with you Chris...I need nothing but all these modifications to the Standard line have got me thinking too!

A little patience will likely pay off. Many people will actually be disenchanted with the new neck configuration. I think we will see a number of these new models being unloaded because of this. I’m not saying that most will be disappointed, but as with the D18s, a few will hit the streets.
Just my guess. Rb |

* I have a 2014 D18 I bought new back then that has become my fav and I perform with it as well....I recently purchased a 00018e Retro to gig along with it because I like the F1 Aura Plus system.
** However, as rumoured, I don't see the F1 being offered on the Retro for 2018 being replaced with the easier to use VT Enhance because I think the F1 was too complicated for many folks and did not sell.…that's too bad because I played both systems a lot thru my rig and found the F1 to be a much better system in several ways for what I do as a working musician. *** The VTE is decent, but does not blend enough of the none adjustable single Aura image into the Matrix and the SBT blend's tone ie the ENHANCE, was thin and unusable for me...I'd rather have the Baggs Anthem they offer now on the e-models. **** Glad I got an F1 version from Maury at a good price while it was still available! But, now even tho I'm a mahogany kind of guy, the D35 looks so much tastier now with neck profile I like, nut, tort-gard, and ANTIQUE binding! …oh Maury, throw in an Anthem and send me one! (when I'm rich and famous) eric

I now have the new D-18 and I played the updated 2017 D-28. I liked the D-28 but I LOVE my D-18.
I preferred the D-35 to the new (2017) D-28. I also preferred the HD-28 to the new (2017) D-28. Tonally speaking. I took exception the the more narrow nut width spacing on the HD-28 and the D-35. I simply do not play as cleanly or execute well on 1 11/16". So the new enhancements to the HD-28 are going to make it the most compelling 'compliment' to my D-18. I find the sound of Mahohany and rosewood very different and unique. So I don't see an HD-28 replacing a D-18. But for some, I do see the new HD-28 possibly replacing even the new D-28.

I was just about to order a new guitar. I was debating between the D-35 and the new D-28. When does the New D-35 become available?

00-28
The 2017s 00-28s are going to be somewhat unique, since they only had one production year before the changes in 2018.
So really there will only be a single year of standard production 00-28s with the white binding/black guard/non-aged top... |

I have the initial GPC-28E, and other than the bracing it feels like they prettied it up a bit--yep pickguard for example. I L O V E my guitar and haven't seen a whole lot about it out there. Sweetwater has a mild discount of around 4% on the 2017 version (down from the $3299 retailers have been selling it for) and I was concerned it would go away. Glad to see Martin at least take another whack at it.

Honestly I love my 2012 D-18 but I also own a standard scalloped bracing HD-28 and it is a great guitar.
I liked the fact that you could have different tone flavour in the Martin guitar line. I did not like the pre 2012 D-18 so I felt the fusion of D-18V and D-18 was an upgrade. I felt the same about the 000-18 in 2014... I am not so sure about the HD-28 and HD-28V. I think we had two great guitars... and now we will have only one left. The Marquis and Aura F1+ Retros were also a great loss... But I guess they should make what people want to buy. My 2 cents, Cuki

I agree with those saying they’d prefer a bit wider saddle string spacing (at least on non-dread bodies). However it seems my opinion on this my be in the minority..
Either way, I’m still extremely happy with these new 2018 changes! I want my hands on a D-21! |

I’ve been jammed all day at work and didn’t even realize Martin had released a complete revamp of the entire Standard series. This is amazing. They are going to sell a TON of guitars now with the 1 3/4 nut MLO/PA taper neck and open geared butterbean tuners on much of the line. I also agree that Martin is absolutely going to KILL it with the new HD-28! HD-28v probably goes bye-bye shortly.
Smart move for the manufacturing line too. More simplicity and standardization hopefully means more manufacturing accuracy and better tonal consistency within the models. The one I will be interested in is the short scale new 000-28, but only if they haven’t gimped it with 5/16” bracing. I’m hoping that’s a typo and will get the 1/4” bracing of the 000-18. Home Run Martin, you did good! And great job FINALLY getting rid of those ugly and heavy Grover Rotomatics. Was long overdue.
