Default What musician/artist do you sound like?

So the question is, who do you sound like? What song do you really like to sing and make sure you get the tone right?

Straight up, I'm all about some Randy Travis, and I absolutely love singing Atlanta Blue. Somehow but in a good way, George Straight gets in there too. Not that I've done much listening lately, but I "put out" on some dave matthews vocals. Once did a open mic with my brother on guitar while I ripped Bartender into a standing O , even though i told the crowd it was a cover song.

There, I said it,
Me

Due to throat and tongue cancer treatment in 2017, (the same issue as John Prine and Levon Helm) I lost my voice completely for a while, and then it became a gruff gritty sound with virtually no range.

Even a speech specialist could do little for me, so after a while, I decided to "force" it be just singing/shouting as much and as often as I could - it was a painful process.

Radio therapy is aimed very precisely and good teeth need to be removed but it affects larger area than one expects. Consequently, it also changed the shape of my mouth and upper palette.

I have "a" voice back now albeit with a reduced range (I seem to prefer almost everything in D), my voice sounds more nasal than it was.

I keep being told on my YouTube channel that I no sound like Willie Nelson.

Whilst I admire Willie a great deal, I would prefer to sound like me in 2016.

Willie's not a bad voice to sound like. I enjoy singing his songs too. It gives me a little grace. I've seen him twice and hear him daily on the radio and such multiple times a day.

I’ve never been told I sound like anyone in particular. I don’t want to sound like anyone of note unless I’m doing a tribute act; which I’m not.

Mostly I sound like me - although I've been known to do a more-than-passable Neil Diamond in younger days...

I'm not really sure. Maybe Froggy from the Little Rascals?

The artist I've been most closely compared to is Mr Haney from Green Acres

I don't sound like anybody in particular. I am most comfortable and get the best audience response from songs that are rockabilly related, so, maybe I kinda sound like a generic '50's rocker?

I don’t personally like my own voice, but I sing anyway. Others say they like my singing though. I wouldn’t want to insult anyone known as a singer by claiming I sound like they do:

I will say I take comfort knowing that people (myself included) pay money to hear Steve Earle, Bob Dylan, Neil Young and Lucinda Williams sing….

Certainly not a lead-vocalist, the best singing chops I can add to any musical situation are accurate harmonies - as long as they're in my range. Sadly, the high harmony in Baby Blue resides a few notes above where I can leap on a good day. Absolutely love singing John Lennon's low harmonies that follow a 3rd or 5th below McCartney's (Words of Love and If I Fell).

But then there's the issue of getting wrapped up in lead guitar riffs that don't coincide in lock-step with the vocal. And worse yet, bass. I can not play bass and sing (or sing and play bass).

On guitars, I'm an unapologetic covers-playing copy-cat, electric and acoustic. Style wise, I tend toward Mike Campbell-type stuff that doesn't require blinding speed. My son heard me jamming at full volume once and told me I'd "obviously" stolen a lot from Page, Dharma and "that Tom Petty Guy." I'm not sure he meant it as a compliment, but I took it as such and thanked him profusely, lol.

My own voice doesn’t really sound like anyone I can think of, but I am a tenor. I spent a lot of years - decades - in cover bands singing other guys’ famous lead vocals and harmonies, and I tried to be realistic without sounding like a parody. I still sing plenty of covers, but I find it a pleasure to record my own songs where I can use my own voice, and my own harmonies. It’s funny how some people look at singing: some folks think that when it’s time to sing, you just sing. In reality it requires just as much practice as playing an instrument.

A member here on AGF once compared me to Michael Stipe. I don't hear it, but I'll take the compliment.

With only one functioning vocal cord, so, I’m not sure. One was paralyzed in 2015. I need to find an artist with a more limited vocal range.

I try not to sound like anyone. A music teacher once thought I was trying to sound like David Bowie (which I wasn't) and it became a nickname. My wife sometimes hears me playing and reminds me, "Don't copy, be you" if I start sounding like someone. That's something I really appreciate.
