I guess I wasn't aware you used the double X bracing or is that just in this model?

Smile Bridge plate…

Your usual Padouk bridge plate? Looks like one…

Cheers

Double x is pretty much my go to bracing style. I have used others.

I’ve been experimenting with a modified fan.

Default Lapis!

Really like the idea of using minerals in the guitar design.
Playable jewelry
Might even give the guitar some glassy tone.

Thanks to you universe. You know that you are on the verge of engaging in wine talk. Minerality and notes of glass.

One of the two rims ready for top and back. The body is cocobolo. The lining is princess tree, a light and resonant wood prized by Japonese luthiers.

(Another must do guitar extravaganza)

Much of my ornamentation is derivative. I owe Judson a shout out for this rosette. His latest was just the right size and I considered it too pretty to ignore. I hope changing the materials is adequate to save me from copyright infringement.

One guitar has a Sitka top with some BC and the other is an Engelmann top with the micro curl that comes from being on dead quarter. The Sitka top is for the show guitar.

The Sitka top has malachite coloration and a mystery wood that reminds me of some of VanGogh’s brush strokes, the Engelmann top has lapis and paua with the same my#tery wood. I will give a bucket of lard as prize to anyone who can guess what the wood is.

A closer look at the lapis rosette

And the malachite rosette
Thanks for the shout out John and the rosettes look great! I remember the first iterations of that design came about when I was still working with Jason in Arizona. I love what you did with it and I'd still be interested in a WNC luthier meet-up if you are!

Thanks for the compliment and the inspiration Judson.
My brother belongs to a luthier group called LINT which stands for luthier interactive of North Texas and it has some remarkable members. I have always envied him that group. They meet regularly, not terribly often but regularly, and get some interesting speakers to come in to demo techniques, etc and of course share their projects and ideas. We have a number of talented luthiers in our area, just off the top of my head including yourself, Tony Vines, Jane Henderson, Bogdonavich (probably spelled that wrong) Jay Lichty and there are certainly others, especially so if we could interest electric guitar and violin builders. It could be called something like COAL for Consortium of Appalachian Luthiers, or whatever, that just came to mind. It would be interesting to have a group of like minded artisans in one place for a meet and greet regardless of what other organizational efforts arose.

I think that's a great idea! Count me in John.

John, looking great so far! And, I missed your earlier question. I’m hoping to get to BIG, but I just started a new business and have a bunch of family travel already schedule. Not sure I’ll be able to break way. I’ve got a partner in the business, and need to be fair in terms of how much away time I am taking.

Default off to visit Tony

Here is the cocobolo version of the Graybeard. Body finished, neck ready to carve, and bridge position masked off.

I didn't notice the hole in my bench carpet until I posted this pic. I cut that out because some super glue got spilled on that spot making it very scratchy (notice the use of the passive voice avoiding direct responsibility). Anyway, clearly its not a glamor shot, just a progress shot.

Well thanks. If you go to BIG there will be one there and you can play it to your heart's content.
