Those are great stands. We have a handful of the Latch Lake stands at the studio. Certainly makes you feel safe hanging a $30k U-47.
I'd say the same goes for a good mic shock mount. A nice Rycote or the Enhanced Audio M600 might be pricey, but well worth the piece of mind.

I haven't come across the M600 before but I do own a few Rycote mounts and they're a pleasure to use.

Got one of my new Triad-Orbit stands together this week amid a whole lot of post production (photo) and a decent retouching job for Garrett turbos. This stand is, well, just wow. I'll get around to a couple other detail shots but this view was the first that sort of reached out and grabbed me. And that's one of the Lauten Audio tube mics hanging off the end.

I just found it on the Sweetwater site. That stand is a piece of art. Wow!

that looks like a top-shelf tripod! I was really surprised to see the price. Given they make photography gear, (as any photogs here know) camera gear is one of the few industries that may surpass music gear in sticker shock!
Gotta say, I put mic stands (LatchLake in my case) in the same category as SoundSeats. WAY more than I EVER thought I'd pay for a stand or chair, but the "cry once, smile forever" cliche applies. There's always a thread or two that evolves into "what should I spend limited funds on to improve my home studio?", and mic stands and chairs are rarely mentioned. I've found that in day to day usage, my soundest and LakeLatch are a constant source of pleasure and productivity, if in an indirect but sure way.

These Triad-Orbit stands ARE big and they are solid and they won't be right for everyone or everything but they will hold a heavy mic without complaining and they won't drop it, and the entire integrated system is pretty amazing as well. I could easily see adding a Latch Lake to the mix somewhere down the road but first I've got to get that second stand put together. |

A $1400 mic stand for a home studio? Really?

Yes, really. And it's not quite a "home" studio. It takes up a portion of my photo studio and includes a $15K Genelec system, but yes, a $1400 stand because I've got to hang those four pound mics boomed in and set at odd angles - mostly to be parallel to the left or right side of Gee's accordion plus we're making high quality recordings that are being used commercially all over the place and it's important to me to not fight crappy equipment (Ultimate) and this is one more piece of equipment that I no longer have to fret over.
And btw, it's not one, but two of these because I have two of those heavy L/A tube mics. And two because you always, whenever possible, want a backup. |

A high quality mic stand is insurance against high quality mics being damaged from tip overs. It only took one occurrence for me to learn that lesson.

I get where you're coming from, but some home studios are income producing studios that happen to be located in someone's home.
I probably wouldn't go for it in my own situation (no microphones over $500) but I understand why one would want to protect their investment. That said, I have invested in better quality stands for years for both live and studio use, and it can be a good place to spend more in order to enjoy peace of mind, confidence and ease of use.

I got one of the 2200's used a few years ago when I started recording drums. It's the only stand that's given me the confidence to throw an R44 directly over the snare/drum kit (Glyn Johns type set up). After awhile, the R44 did burn out one of the plastic bushings on the 2200 on the swivel where the mic mounts.
For anything but that application, it hasn't really been necessary yet. Moving it across town was like moving a Fender Twin. Its certainly got stable reach like no other, though! |

Yes, it would be nice to have a stable stand. I cheaped out and bought two On-Stage MS7701B Euro Boom stands. Last year I was in the room when I watched one tip over with a Rode NT-1A on it. One of the aluminum prongs on the pop filter bent, but the mic was undamaged. Still, you don’t sign up for that.
They were thirty bucks each at the time. A cautionary tale.

I watched my Blue Kiwi hit the floor. The front grill was dented badly so I shipped it right off to Blue for repair. While I waited to hear from Blue, I worried that the capsule may have been damaged. That would have been a disaster because I have one of the Latvia-made Kiwis and I know there's some difference between those and the newer Kiwis. Luckily, the grill took all the damage and for the $50 it cost me, I felt I got away cheaply. I gave away all my inexpensive mic stands and ordered an Atlas Sound MS25 and an Ultimate Support MC125. Since then, I've also added a Latch Lake 3300. People who use cheap stands are gambling with their mics.
