Picked up an AC722ce last week and played my first gig with it Friday night. I was going to use it for my outdoor gigs this summer but after Friday night it has earned an indoor spot! The tone was excellent and better yet the playability was fantastic. A few fellow guitar players at the gig came by and asked about the guitar, they were impressed too. I'm sold -

Played an E10D, an E8OM and the AC420, which is the guitar Eastman is giving away in a current promotion. I'd say it was a toss-up between the E80M and the AC420, both of which though new and still green, sounded really good! Played another AC too, but I get confused after playing more than 2 guitars in a 40 minute stretch, so I don't remember which. Possibly the AC 512.
I was in that shop a few months ago and, you know how they size you up and try to figure how much you're going to spend? At that point they were pushing me towards Eastman, but I wasn't biting. Now I kinda sorta wish I had. Nice guitars. Though I could see why they have a reputation for blemishes, etc; a little corner of a bridge that didn't get painted, some other symmetrical bulges that I wouldn't begin to know how to describe in guitar-talk. I have to say that most of them are pretty impressive for the cost. I used to ignore them when I went to the store, not anymore. They have a good thing going. I do wish the finish was a little nicer but the sound is great.

This one floats my boat, and it's for sale here in the classifies section. I'm surprised it hasn't been sold yet.

Anyone with strong opinions about either the AC 412 or AC 512? Does it come down to preference of tone woods or is there something else that differentiates them?

I seem to detect a pattern emerging in jrporter's purchases...
(BTW, the E8D is the model that I thought outdid every other Eastman back before Christmas, when the local dealer had a wide range of models in stock: greater volume & articulation than even the E20D. Nice guitar, jrp!) |

I've been an Eastman fan for about 2 years, have owned 4 and have played most of their models. Eastmans are accurately described to have a "shimmering" tone, a bit louder than other, higher priced guitars, often compared to Collings. But of course, old strings don't allow a good evaluation. Which Eastman "blows off my socks?". Well, if I could only pick 1, I'd cheat, here we go: it would be the AC800 Series (Engleman/RW), the AC500 Series (Engleman/Mahog), and the AC400 Series (Sitka/RW), oh, and 1 more, well, 2 more, the E10D (Adi/Mahog) and the E8D (same as AC400 Series). Probably the E20SS slope shoulder too, if I could play 1. So, what's left? Their Sitka hogs and Adi rosewoods aren't as exciting to me, but, I'm sure it's just personal preference. For 30 years, I had only played 12 strings, the Eastman AC720-12 string I owned was the best I've ever held, "sweeter" than Guild's best. My Eastman AC822 Grand Auditorium Engleman Spruce over Rosewood...oh gosh..

Both E20OM and E20p are remarkable , but the E6 and E10 OMs are pretty impressive too.

I'm a dreadnought kind of guy. My AC420 was just kind of dropped into my lap as I'd never really seriously considered anything at the time but saving all my money for a particular Martin I knew was coming up for sale.
From the moment I picked up the AC420 all thoughts of the Martin faded. When it was offered to me at a tremendous price, I passed on it and all my playing buddies understood why. Nobody really spends much time discussing price when they play the Eastman. Generally someone will joke about the eventual price increase when folks realize what Eastman offers. It's a guitar that stands on it's own with no need for any excuses about being "pretty good for the money". If I were shopping for a new guitar tomorrow it would probably be an E20D but I'd certainly have to look at AC models just to be sure.

I have only had the pleasure of trying a few Eastmans, but the one that blew me away in that group was the E20P. Rosewood parlor guitar, with a great traditional shape, herringbone purfing, and nice appointments. I would call it a super great strummer, but it certainly was a sweet little guitar and I wouldn't hesitate to go that route if I was looking for a parlor size.

I took a chance and bought a E10SS mailorder from 12th Fret last January and I just love it. I can't describe the tone in words but will say that to my ear it has a very authentic sound and the bass has great presence. The only downside is the nitro finish is delicate and the guitar needs to be handled carefully. I haven't played any of the other Eastman models so I can't comment on which model is best but I'm very pleased w/ my E10SS.
