Practice.
Learn as many jazz, bluegrass, ragtime, country blues standards that you can, inside and out. Alcohol and other intoxicants should be nowhere near practice time. It's ok to indulge a bit during jams, but practice time is business hours. Buy the best guitar you can afford from the beginning, and make the necessary sacrifices you can in order to get it. It's hard to find inspiration in a cheap guitar that isn't enjoyable to play.

"Find out what a "set-up" is and get one! Save yourself from hours and hours of struggle and discouragement trying to play an acoustic with high action, poor relief, and sketchy intonation."

Your first guitar should be a 6-string, not a 12-string.
When you do buy a 12, spend a little extra and get one that isn't a dreadnought.

If I could time travel advice would be the last thing I'd worry about. I would, however, have a blast rewriting history.

Personally, if when I was a young man, "I'd" showed up from the future, the young man would have probably poured both of us another drink, and "both" of us would have continued on the same path... double trouble and twice the fun...no regrets...

My parents were farmers, never finished high school, and therefore they were not able to give any career guidance. Just a lot of love, provided food on the table, and shelter. I was an average student, and by the grace of God, eventually got a bachelor's degree in science. Today, I work in the pharmaceutical industry where advanced degrees are desired. I regret not pursuing a doctorate degree.
So my advice to you is if you want to pursue a career in the sciences, go for an advanced degree to achieve your highest potential. |
