Default Paul Simon and a bit about song writing

Nice and rather nostalgic clip from an interview of Paul Simon by Dick Cavett:

He puts a lot of thought into his writing.

That was great! The haircut!!! Hard not to chuckle at it... seems this must have been just before he and Garfunkel split up?

Simon is just an iconic American songwriter... he's been one of my favorites since the mid-60's when I first heard "Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M.". I believe he has written a book about songwriting, can't recall the title. I remember reading him talk about "having the last line", knowing how the song would end, before it's fully fleshed out...

I'm pretty sure I actually saw this when it was originally broadcast, being a fan of Cavett and Simon, both, but it was good to watch it again.

Thanks for posting this!

Derek, what a splendid bit of history. We live in such an extraordinary age, when old gems from the past can be revisited and appreciated on demand. It is fascinating to hear how Paul drew from Bach, and gospel and other influences to write a song that, in totality, is distinct from any of those genres, and is unique to Paul Simon.

My wife and I saw James Taylor three weeks ago. He opened with Something in the Way She Moves, and explained that it was the song he played for the Beatles during his Apple audition. He said that Paul liked it so much "he went home and rewrote it." And then confessed that was no problem for him, because he had "stolen" so many things from the Beatles over the years. Giants standng on the shoulders of other giants.
