Yes Dru, that's the one. Mine is from the same approximate time period - not exactly sure when I got it.

I always wanted an SG, but never seemed to pull the trigger on one..
A couple of years ago I spotted this NOS 2013 Ebony SG Standard hanging on the wall at Sam Ash. Decently priced, as well. I picked it up, plugged it into a Fender Twin that was sitting there, and that's all she wrote... I knew it was gonna walk out with me that day. And it did! |

2013 - I'm assuming that has the 490R/498T pickups? I have that set in my Les Paul Studio and like it. Can really rock out on them.

I am on SG #3. The first was a 70s model brown finish I couldn’t stand. Next was a 2008 stolen out of the truck after a gig. Most recent is a 2016 red with Throbak PAFs.

I love SGs. My first quality electric was an SG and I still have it.
I played lots of Les Pauls in the seventies, but I vastly preferred the SG - way more versatile, you could play different styles and get distinctive tones. Whenever I played a Les Paul I found myself gravitating towards a stock set of tones. It was like I couldn't escape the gravitational pull of all my guitar heroes at the time. And the weight of the Paul! Holy cow. Ultimately I moved on from Gibson because I like the longer Fender-style scale length which works so well for me. But I'll always enjoy a good SG.

But like you, I've also got an LP Studio (2013 model, as well) and that LP does have the 490R/498T pups. And yep - they are meant for rocking out, no doubt about it. Kinda muddy with clean tones, though, IMO.. The 57's can do both clean and dirty. |

Thanks, Dru. Not intentional, but "Ebony and Ivory", I guess..
The LP Studio has a granadillo board, while the SG has rosewood. The granadillo board initially gave me pause, but this LP played so well that I overlooked that. I'm actually very happy with the granadillo board now. |

I've owned 2, an Ivory Epi G-400 Custom that's long gone and a Satin Cherry 2016 Gibson Special HP with the mini-humbuckers that's a lifer. The long range plan for the HP is new tuners in place of the G-Force, replace the PCB and eventually a Bigsby.
As far as neck dive, both of mine had/have it. The HP is the worse offender with the G-Force tuners, but a wide leather strap has helped a ton. If neck dive is really bad or really bugs you, you can always move the strap button up to the horn like Tommy Iommi did for some of his SG's. I've also heard of people adding weight in the control cavity to help counterbalance neck dive although I've never tried that.

I'm reading the specs for the 2018 Gibson SG HP model on the Gibson site. It now comes with a AA figured maple top. I think they must have did it to make those tops "pop" (cosmetically) but it's gotta change the tone. Doesn't say how thick the top is - guessing it's very thin (when compared to a LP).

Any other SG fans? Here's my Standard. I played it yesterday for the first time in a few weeks and it just rocked!
