Gotoh tuners
Well, I got my Gotoh 510Z's in for both my 855 and the 815.
Unfortunately the 855 is still in the hospital getting some frets and stuff installed so I'll have my luthier install the tuners for it. Now the 815 install was a piece of cake. Tools needed (what I used) #0 philips head driver 10mm nut driver. 1. Remove the strings 2. Loosen the 10mm hex nut for each tuner on top of the head stock 3. Remove the small wood screw for each tuner on the back of the headstock 4. Finish removing the 10mm hex nut and drop the tuning machine out. Replacement is steps 1-4 in reverse order. What I replaced was the stock Grover tuning machines. And I have to tell ya, these tuners are sweet and well worth the month wait to get them from Domo intl.

Did you have to drill new holes in the back to the headstock?

Quote:
My older Grovers had a lot of shaft play, in fact one of them was binding on the inside somehow and another was starting to get that way. I hadn't ever done anything with the Grover tuners except occasionally snug down the 10mm hex nuts and back screws. What's nice about the 21 to 1 turn ratio is that when tuning up, it's more work to go sharp so it's easier to get it right on. The down side is for someone who likes to drop tune in the middle of a set, takes longer. But since I don't drop tune in the middle of my sets, it's not an issue.

Ok, they were the older Grovers that came on the 815s and not the Taylor Grover style tuners at come on new 815s today. Is that right? My point is your tuners are different than you get a new 815 today. Right?

I suppose. The tuning machines came off of my 2002 815.
Here's some pics of one of them. Here's a pic of the box the new ones came in.

FYI, those are standard Grover Rotomatics. Hmm, I have quite a few of these in the herd... I wonder if they went through some sort of quality sag.
The gold finish is pretty weak, and always has been. A few years and the buttons pit and wear through the thin gold.

It's the first time I've seen the 21:1 's in the 6 o'clock position. Usually it's in the 5 and 7. I love mine. Looks great!
