I am going through this exact inquiry. I just bought a Yamaha CSF1m. Cannot find a pickguard to fit it so will need to go to luthier to have one cut. I think I will do black though as the sunburst fades from orange-y to brown to black and the binding is black. But to be honest with a beautiful sunburst you cannot go wrong with a tortoise or a black! Enjoy it whatever you choose!

I like a really dark tortoise shell pickguard on sunburst.

Don't know if this applies to SBs, but I put a clear pick guard on a 20 year old beautifully silked maple Larrivee - the wood was too beautiful to hide.

I'm a fan of firestripe on a sunburst, certainly looks good on my Waterloo.

Clear guard is always my preferance. Frank Ford from Gryphon Strings posted an excellent Youtube video on how to cut and apply your own.

This is what I do. Why cover gorgeous wood or sunbursts? The StewMac clear pickguard is ultra-thin and invisible. Since it's clear, there's no reason to try to become a master pick-guard cutter - just peel and install. It's the thinnest I've found. Thickness: Clear: 0.011" (0.28mm)
