Old Guitar Day
Picked this up today. 1947 J-45.
Neck reset and plenty of cracks but all fixed. |

ooooooo..... nice!
how does it sound? It seems that the J45 is the one Gibson that catches my ear, the few times I've had the chance to play Gibsons. I bet this one sounds great!

If there is one guitar I'd like to add to my collection to make it complete, I think it would be one of those '40s J45's. They are one of the the driest, woodiest, and airy-est sounding instruments on the planet IMO.
Congratulations. I am officially envious.

Sweet!!! Were you looking for a vintage Gibson for a long time or just stumble on this?

Very cool! I have a '46 and love it! The comments about the dry, woody thump are so true. Good luck with neck reset and crack fixes - who are you taking it to? I am sure you are making sure it is someone with a lot of experience with old guitars!!
ETA: oh wait, perhaps I misread - it has already had that work done? If so, I assume you are pleased with the work - a neck reset by that age is pretty much standard and doesn't really affect value if done well....

Congrats.
The 1946 to 1949 Gibsons are oft said to be the best the company ever turned out. And I have loved me some 1940s Gibsons over the past 55 years and still have a 1942 J-50 hanging around. But I would say just shy of perfect - the difference being the 1/16" shaved off the nut width in 1947.
