Default New sinkhole for money

First it was picks, could capos be far behind? Ordered a Paige, the $70 one with the separate hard plastic tips for the pads. Just a moment of weakness and the older I get, the more I appreciate good tools. Anybody have one?

I have the newer, less expensive Paige capo for ~$30. I had forgotten about the $70 version.

I hope you like it. I use my $30 Paige capo here and there but not as often as I use my Shubb Deluxe capo.

I’ve spent a ton on various fancy capos in the last year. I still use my regular Paige capos on every guitar without a volute.

Shubb basic C1 or C1b.

I did try to order one of those fancy elliot-McKinney thingies, but after the whole complex ordering specification process, they refused to sell to me as I am in the UK.
Staying Shubb.

I reach for my Schubb more than my others. I have a G7, a Thalia, a Taylor and a few others also.

D'Addario NS Capo Lite.

Sturdy, only weighs a few ounces, works great and cheap at $12 bucks.

Any of you guys found that your capos don't match radius' very well (radii..or radiae..what is the plural of radius?)

I have seen a lot of guys here in Nashville using the Paiges...what's better about them?

I have been a lifelong keyser guy, but I'm not madly in love with them...always have to re-tune under the capo even when my intonation is spot on.

Both of my main performers have volutes BTW

Default Capos

I used to use NS Pro capos, but I think the stopped making them. Used the lite for a while. Just tried Dunlop Pivit, seems to work well.

There is a great alternative to a yoke style capo (like the Elliot/McKinney) and that is the capos made in Slovakia by the mandolin builder Peter Hlavaty. I have three of these. They do not have the jewel-like finishing details of the Elliots, but they only cost about $35. The first of them were produced in matte finish but he now produces them highly polished in stainless steel. I replace his pad with softer latex tubing, but other than that they have been great. They also have something no other capo I am aware of has, and that is a much larger knob to tighten the bar against the strings. This is easier on the fingers, provides greater torque and just makes them function better. To get one, search Hlavaty Instruments on Facebook and send him a note. I think that price included shipping. Imagine an Elliot capo hand made in a modest machine shop and that’s what you’d get. Here is a photo of two of mine, one in matte finish the other polished.

BluesKing777.
I just saw this in an email from Shubb.
Looks like a new capo will be coming my way in the near future.

WRT the fretboard radius, the G7th "ART" style capos help mitigate this and do a great job at applying less pressure and getting a clean tone. FWIW, I love my G7th capos (gen 1 and 2) as they work great. But now with the gen 3 "ART" I see/hear the difference. I absolutely recommend these.

The problem I have had with the Keyser units is their gorilla spring tension. For live work, I use the D'Addario "triple-action" that has the same type mechanism as the Keyser capo so it is quick on/off, but has adjustable spring tension. The ability to adjust the tension and use "just" enough to do the job is what makes them far superior to the Keyser IME.
