i've used Fret Doctor fingerboard Oil for years. it was the best i had found having tried multiple brands.
enter Mcknights Fretboard Revival Conditioning balm. Saw an old thread on this here and decided to order a can. It arrived quickly and over the past 4 weeks i've used it on striped ebony and soon on some Macassar on a custom Nechville. I'm very pleased with the results. Goes on easily and with very little product. I have been putting it on at nights end after doing fretwork or reshaping, and leaving it till next day- because that works for me. next evening i buff and i'll tell you, this is some special mix. typically after a day or two the Fret Doctor sheen has disappeared. not so with the McKnight mixture. after these 4 weeks, the items it was used on still maintain the deep lustrous sheen it has at first use. the wood feels very smooth and rich. it definitely enhances the looks and grain of the wood. feels great to the touch. and the pics do not do justice, the depth of color and grain looks so much better and different between without and with, in person. here are some pics, the first pic of each pair will be without, then second pic will be with. the taylor striped ebony TR cover i forgot to take the pic of before i applied, but i used the back side of the cover which was identical to the other side-hey, this isn't textbook okay. i know my lighting varied day to day, and the Bishline i did not line up before and after, oh well, wasn't thinking when i took those. I'll add more pics as i apply it to more woods, i have some really nice stuff waiting to be worked on. the Taylor bridge had a meltdown performed and it looked really "parched" afterwards. looks very rich now. same with the Bishline, fretboard and headstock veneer looked really brown and parched, now its a lush pretty wood. Oh, in case you want to treat yourself, Tim McKnight has been around this forum for years, well known and respected luthier. His website is McknightGuitars.com, and he can be reached via PM "Tim McKnight" and he is a sponsor here on the forum. ****anyone else using this product and you want to add pics in this thread, feel free to load up all you want, its neat to see good products in action****** drum roll: Last edited by darylcrisp; 12-20-2021 at 11:04 PM. |

DC - I would have to agree with everything you wrote. I received a tin from McKnights a few weeks back and used it on my Eastman E20D. I didn't take any pictures but both fretboard and bridge had a noticeable improvement in appearance (both ebony). Also the fretboard is a lot smoother on the fingers. I only used a little bit out of the tin, so I have a feeling this one tin is going to last a long time. I have an Iris with a Katalox board that I will try it on with the next string change. So far I am very impressed with the conditioner.

I got some too, and I like it a lot. I cheated and used a blow dryer to warm the FB a bit, as I needed to restring right away. Worked fine.
You only need a tiny bit. My fb looks good two months later. Thanks McKnights!!! Paul

The problem with most of the fretboard cleaning products on the market is they are heavily fortified with “petroleum distillates” which is more often than not paint thinner or naphtha. These solvents pull natural oils out of the wood. The visual affect is very short term because these harsh solvents actually dry out the wood instead of nourishing it.
Our product puts food grade oils back into the wood then traps those oils under a thin film of natural waxes and the treatment lasts for months as others have attested to. |

new Taylor K21e and an amazing sounding instrument-this one has it from the getgo. without image first/with image next. the first image showing the nut area "without", i put some of the product on a fret area before taking that picture. once you give it time to set(instructions say around 2 hrs-but i've been letting it lay overnight due to the way i work), buff and it will not look "wet" but will have a deep sheen which will stay for i do not know yet because every wood piece i've used it on over the past 6 weeks or so still has the deep sheen. the feel of the board is definitely enhanced as well. ( the last two are not exact in the same area, but close enough). i have a Beard Jerry Douglas "BlackBeard" resonator with a Bubinga(red) fretboard(rest of the guitar is transparent black over solid mahogany), i can't wait to remove the strings and put this on it. May be a week or three as i have a couple electrics and a FLamenco setup pending that are overdue to be finished. Last edited by darylcrisp; 12-20-2021 at 11:54 PM. |
