Talk to Bob, he is overstocked in FWI, I'm sure he has what you need and he's a great guy as well.

We spoke to Bob about FWI for my Bashkin build completed in January, but he was low on stock and didn't have anything he wanted to offer to us. Hopefully he will be back in stock now - if so let me know!

Guitar parts and more-
Although the fossil walrus is rather pitted often, I wouldn’t use as a saddle or nut.

Well, that is good to know! I just received some nice FWI bridge pins and thought to go whole hog...

Thanks

I'm not sure where you get that idea or what material you are buying.
The outer layer, or the dentin layer, is dense and homogenous.
The core is porous and is an inferior material.

What Tim said! FWI is quite dense and makes a great saddle or nut material. I have used FWI on several guitars over the years, and have never been disappointed with the results / sound.

I know Bob C usually has some, though he has been limited to shipping Ivory to in-state only (Georgia). I know this applies to Elephant Ivory, but not sure about FWI. Give Bob a shout - he will get you the good stuff if he has it and can ship it.

You may want to check with Dave at www.guitarpartsandmore.com ...he may still carry pieces that large. Keep in mind it will likely be relatively expensive.

Just as an FYI, I do have the pins, but stopped selling the nuts and saddles a number of years ago, so I only have material to make smaller parts...Fender nuts, very thin saddles, etc. But yes, it is a phenomenal material...tone is subjective, but structurally speaking, if you find good material, it's up there with some of the best I've used. I only stopped selling it because of supply/availability/price gouging issues.

Just out of curiosity what are you considering a thick blank or the size of each the nut and saddle.

I got the idea from someone who sells saddles, and from looking at the Walrus Jaw bridge pins I bought that were pretty, but also pretty pitted and non-uniform.
Call Bob Colosi and see what he says.
Perhaps I’m wrong.

The Jaw is pitted and non uniform because it is bone. Ivory is different material. The bone can actually fossilize after time, ivory doesn't seem to ever hit that same hardness and brittle level that truly fossilized bone does though it is denser material.

Don't need to call Bob, I have and have seen plenty of examples.

Smile Thank you all

Thanks all! As always the AGF is a font of knowledge....

TimL, and everyone else too:

"Just out of curiosity what are you considering a thick blank or the size of each the nut and saddle."

My recent JKs have saddles approximately 2.8" X 1/4". BUT WE HAVE DECIDED TO GO WITH 2.8"X 3/16" NEXT TIME.

The nuts are fairly normal. 1.8" X 1/4". (1 25/32")

Using my trusty digital caliper from harbor freight....

Thanks again and happy pickin'

Paul

Default Camel bone

My luthier Chris Davis owner of BR Fret shop has me convinced that camel “shin” bone is just “da bomb”. Let me know what you need brother.

Smile Bump for FWI

Let's try this again...

And, Alan, I called Chris and he was almost out of the fabled camel shin bone. Sigh.

Anyone else with suggestions on camel SHIN bone, or FOSSILIZED WALRUS IVORY?

Happy Fourth to all

Paul
