Default "Come Monday" by Jimmy Buffet (cover)

This is my cover of Jimmy Buffet's 1974 song, "Come Monday." The guitar is my old 1967 Martin D-35. Mike Alpine suggested this song to me yesterday in post #68 HERE.

I hope you like this -- thanks for watching. - Glenn

Hi Mike,

Oh, how nice that you are the first one to find this video and comment on it! I'm glad I was able to record this quickly. Your suggestion came along while I was still debating internally about what song to work on this week. "Come Monday" is very straightforward, a song I knew from the past, and very much in my vocal range, and the accompaniment is no big deal. So this fell into place for me.

I am not used to singing songs in such a low register, so I had to do a few takes to make sure I was really on pitch on the low notes. Also, a song sung this low can tend to sound a little dead, so a person has to work to put energy into a song like this. I debated with myself about whether to put the capo up a little higher on the neck, but I decided that Jimmy Buffet fans would really want to hear this song performed where Jimmy Buffet sang it. So in the end, that's what I did.

I'm very glad that you are pleased with this rendition! Thanks so much for your comments!

- Glenn

Glenn, this is beautifully done. Your guitar tone is sublime, and your voice is as smooth as Tennessee Whiskey to borrow a line from Mr Stapleton. Really fine work here.

Hi Rick!

Thank you so much for your generous comments and kind words! I like the thought of sounding even a little like Tennessee whiskey. Thank you for that! I do agree, too, that the D-35 sounds very nice in this rendition. I didn't really spend any time trying different guitars for this. I just picked up my D-35 feeling like "This is the guitar I want to play here!" So thank you very much!

Glenn,

I was so surprised to see how quickly this was posted, although not a total shock, as I have been getting to know you. I had a feeling you knew the song. You mentioned the low register and I was so pleasantly surprised that you sang it there. I'm used to you singing much higher, with my voice cracking as I attempt to sing along with you, so when you produced such rich, low notes I was again impressed with your range and talent. You were easily able to add emotion and life singing lower as you do high. Such a pleasure to listen.

I don't have a song on deck for you yet, but so glad you are willing to hear my song suggestions. I'm going to look for something really upbeat for you, if that's OK.

As I write this, while certainly not upbeat, Suzanne by Leonard Cohen comes to mind. I play this with a friend, we trade verses and harmonize in various places, and when we sing this song together, we seem to create this "goose-bump" feeling as we play. It just comes together so nicely. So, if you're familiar and want to create your own version, that would be a joy to hear. Next time he and I play, I'll record it, even if it is just a Sound Cloud file, that one would be fun to share.

Ooh...an easy one...Credence, Have You Ever Seen the Rain, another you can fill with harmony, guitar fills...

Play on, my friend, I'm a fan!

Mike

Great rendition.
A lot of people don't know how difficult the phrasing is on that song. Especially in the bridge. I still haven't quite got it down, much to my dismay.

Glenn,

Simply the best cover of the JB classic I have every heard! The D35 was absolutely the perfect guitar. I learned this song several years ago and I have since forgot it, however I now know I need to return to it. Thank you for reminding me of how beautiful it can be performed.
