Thumbs up Applegate Jumbo Review

http://www.guitargal.com/collections...e-jumbo-guitar

The bought the guitar in the link above from Robin at Guitar Gallery. This is the 2nd guitar I've purchased from them. Their service is great. Both the instruments I've purchased from them have been large bodied finger style guitars. The first being a Ryan Cathedral.

I was recently down at Luthiers Collection in the San Diego area. I fell completely head over heels for a custom Olson Jumbo that they had. I compared it against several high end larger guitars from builders like Jeff Traugott, Ervin Somogyi, Kim Walker, and several others. The Olson had exactly the sound for fingerstyle that I wanted. I could not swing the Olson financially. I came home and noticed Dream Guitars had an Olson J as well which was also more than I could afford.

I remembered reading that Brian Applegate had learned a lot from working with James Olson. I came across the J Applegate at Guitar Gallery and I thought hey this one is just the ticket. I love most forms of European Spruce and I also hate spending a lot extra for Brazilian rosewood so I liked that this one had old growth Indian rosewood! Well the guitar came in on Friday and I've spent about 6 hours playing it over the weekend. The tone is very thick and rich sounding but it's also very balanced for a large instrument! It's crazy responsive for a big guitar. I actually think I like this Applegate better than the Olson I wished for. The neck is quite nice on the Applegate and works perfect for what I need. For a jumbo this guitar is a straight pure fingerstyle guitar in every way. The reverb in the box is very special. I'd love to have another Applegate J in Cedar and Cocobolo. Anyway I'm quite thankful I bought this fine instrument and I look forward to a lot more great tone for years to come!!! I'm going to have a K&K Pure Mini installed on it in the next couple weeks.

Check out Guitar Gallery's photos and video.

Here's a video I recorded of it.

Congrats on your new Applegate. I share your preference for Brian's voicing over that of Jim Olson's. Neither is objectively better/worse, but I think Brian achieves a more focused voice with more clarity than the "rumble" I've experienced with all the Olsons I've had the chance to hear.

Since I play both finger style and strumming, I find the Applegate sound to still bring the overtones I like with a little more clarity when strumming.

Enjoy the new guitar!

Welcome to the Applegate club Bobby! I had that wood combo before in SJ size and it was really great for fingerstyle, very responsive. I also had Cedar/Coco and Cedar/Braz RW Applegates and both were sublime. Congrats!
