Default Do CF guitars differ like wood guitars?

So I was talking with a violin playing friend of mine and asked him about carbon fiber instruments. The one thing he said that struck me was that there are tonal differences just like with wood. He said if you line up 10 of the same CF guitar made by the same manufacturer, you will hear tonal differences between them.

I have always been aware of this with wood but I guess I thought CF guitars of the same body style and maker would be "carbon copies" of each other sound wise (pun intended).

No reason to doubt him but it hadn't crossed my mind.

What has been your experience with this?

I'm thinking of getting a cf guitar soon.

In my experience he is just wrong. There can be differences in years because of improvements but I have seen no difference between the same instrument? Maybe someone like Ted can weight in on this one, he has seen many more than me.

I've played a few RainSongs since getting the Shorty - typical expected differences between body sizes, but the only other Shorty I played sounded very much like mine. Strings make a difference. As does the player.

If the layup schedule for the construction is exactly the same, I would expect a very similar sound.

Yep I've seen ted from LA guitar sales in these forums. Am curious what he might add. Captain Jim, I also am leaning toward the shorty (ft) at this point. Do you have any video or audio of you with that shorty guitar just acoustically? Still enjoying it? General impressions ?

When we bought the Rainsong WS-1000 years ago, we had a choice of four examples at Elderly. The differences in tone were minimal, extremely subtle. There were some minor differences in feel or action.

Haven't recorded with it, and we are on our boat for the summer. I've played out with the Shorty and like it a lot. About the only time it gets played acoustically (not plugged in) is when we're on the boat.

Enjoying it? Absolutely. General impressions? Just to see the difference, I have tried other strings on it, but always seem to come back to the Elixirs. The sound of the guitar gets described by others as "piano-like" and I agree with that.

It is my "travel guitar" this summer on the boat. Served that same duty for much of the winter when we were out with our RV in the desert southwest. Not small in stature - some get misled by the "Shorty" name, I think. It is the same size as a Taylor X12 (Grand Concert) 12-fret. The cutaway allows me to play up on the neck comfortably. Easy to adjust when plugged in. I like the sound of the Fishman pickup.

I don't see it coming to this, but this could easily be my "one and only" acoustic. Don't read too much into that - I have a couple Taylors that I like just as much. I don't think of this as my "Carbon Fiber" guitar or my "travel guitar"... it is the guitar that travels with me with no fuss. I like the "travel package" even more with the Access gig bag.

Easy to like this guitar.

Jim

Holy catfish. I played and bought a used Rainsong Shorty today. I was hoping for "ok" but my reaction was more like "this is stunning". Ok I've bought enough guitars to know that this is partly honeymoon-phase but wow just wow.

Congrats Moondoggie....The Shorty is hard to beat, and as the Captain said, the Elixir Polyweb's seem to be the string.

The shorty will do that to you! As for strings, my favourite are Elixir Light/Medium nano PB.
They take a few hours to settle in then stay that way for a long time. Rich and musical!

Enjoy!

I think the Honolulu Star Advertiser's motto was "Twice a day, mo'betta!"

I finally put a little test drive video together. Recorded and edited on my iphone4 so take that into consideration...

Always blown away by this guitar. I like that the guitar also comes in a gloss format and from what differences I've heard (Macnichol guitars video) they didn't sound at all different-- to my ears.

Enjoy the Shorty moondoggie. I think it will be a long and fine honeymoon indeed!
