Default I've Never Liked or Understood Ovation Guitars!

Why do you think they took off with such bang?!

McCartney and Lennon, post-Beatles, both used'm after playing THE great Gibson's and Martin's. I never understood how Ovation's took off. So slippery with that silly unnatural round back.... What say hue?

Mike,
They sounded good plugged in. I struggled to get a decent live sound with my Martin in the 70s.

Ovations were plug and play.

When they came out, they sounded real great, especially amplified. I have known a lot of people who have owned them. I could never get used to a fiberglass/plastic backed guitar. I guess I was a guitar snob back in the 70's.

The neck played like an electric (not surprisingly, since their strong point was being an electric guitar that resembled an acoustic)...

I had one for a couple of years. Never did bond with it. Don't know why I kept it that long.

When I finally traded it, the GC guy offered me $150 for it (and it had a nice hardshell case). I told him he was nuts. He pointed over to the wall and said he had one just like mine hanging there for $150.

Sure enough, he did.

Pro musicians play what sounds good for the purpose they are trying to accomplish. Tony Rice, for example, surprised many when he recorded tunes with the Adamas that he had been known for playing on traditional Martins and Gibsons in concert.

Ovations are great recording guitars because of very even balanced response. Many traditional acoustic guitars have sound biases that people love in person but that don't necessarily translate to recording and live play situations.

Further, they are near bulletproof. Many musicians like them for travel because they don't want to subject very expensive vintage guitars to the rigors of the road.

Your view of the back as "silly" is something pros ignore when choosing a concert instrument. It works for many. I've seen major artists play them in concert and they sound great on stage and in the studio. Why argue with that?

Both of these gentlemen recorded with Ovations, proving that much of the output comes from the artist, not so much the guitar. I still can't tell the difference between the sound Rice got with his deep-bowl Adamas Ovation and his holy grail, and would have sworn Manzanita was played with the Martin, not the Ovation.

Whenever I played one while seated, it always wanted to become a dobro.

They took off because they were the right tool for the job. Easy to play, sounded good plugged in, and didn't have much issue with feed back. There are LOTS of old ones till around so they must have been built well too.

The DEEP bowl ones are very nice acoustically, unless you are playing bluegrass and have to have THAT sound. They are not bass biased. I have never found a shallow bowled one I liked. The problem is too many people only ever picked up one of those shallow bowls and walked away without plugging it in. You may as well strum a Strat without plugging it in, to be honest.

I have never understood the " It looks funny from the back, so why would anyone play it ? " mind set.

LOL - Like the OP, every time I tried to play one it slipped off my lap and I never liked skinny necks on any guitar. Needless to say I never bought an Ovation.

I played an Ovation for 14 years. Great feel to the neck and it sounded good plugged in. Virtually bullet-proof over lots of miles all those years.

Until I came across these guitar forums, I didn't know it was, somehow, "less desirable" (that's tongue-in-cheek) - it always did all I asked of it. Frankly, it sounded and played better than the Gibson Gospel I had in the 70s.

Maybe a little awkward to sit with, but I have always stood when playing out.

I wish I woulda kept that guitar... I liked and understood it.

I suspect this post is a sneer and does not express genuine curiosity.

Pass.
