Alistairs Finish Flash
The picture below shows I think the raw carbon fiber that Alistair is using in his guitars, this neck is laying on it? You can see it is flashing in this picture. My question is this normal carbon fiber? Does it flash like this? Or does Alistair's raw material have more flash, which adds to his colored finishes.

The way Alistair does the weave and painting has much more flas to them then any of the other carbons out there....you can tell by the pictures of my x 20 that were in an earlier post in this section.

As you case see from the photograph there is so much flash coming from this raw material, never worked with raw fiber to know if this is unusual? Or standard stuff he is taking advantage of. The flash is in the fiber.

The tuners seem to have a lot of flash as well so I'm guessing it's mostly the photography. Not sure what kind of material we are looking at in that Emerald pic but I do know Rainsong used a nickel plated unidirectional carbon fiber on their one off Jazz Guitar we sold a few years ago and it had some serious "flash" given the right light.
You guys can see more pictures and info in the link below. Honestly, I'm sorry I ever let that guitar go. http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...1541720&type=1 |

I don't think there's anything special about his carbon regarding it's 'flash'. It's the way he finishes it.
I've got some raw carbon fabric, carbon kevlar, and straight fiberglass on hand. I've built some carbon items for remote control gliders and rc cars with it mostly, molding vacuum bagging etc. Straight carbon fibers are pretty shiny on their own. Vacuum bag it against a waxed mylar, and you get a mirror finish. Add paint to the mylar before bagging, and the paint transfers to the carbon. (not the method Alistair uses I'm assuming.) Go check out the carbon builder forum RCGroups for a little insight into what guys do in their garages with carbon fiber. Absolutely incredible stuff. link Here's a pic I sent to Alistair sometime last year asking about blue carbon. Shiny stuff. |
