Default Rainsong Black Ice vs Standard Top

Just traded a CA Legecy for a Rainsong JM1000 Black Ice. I have played a standard top and the unidirectional but not a Black Ice. My assumption was the Black Ice is just cosmetic and will sound like the standard top. Guitar will arrive in a couple of days so I will find out but curious for those who have played them along side each other.

I don't have any personal experience with the Black Ice models. However, I’m pretty sure you are correct. I did some searching over at MacNichol.com and found the following quote from Ashvin:

Quote:
The Black Ice was designed mainly with a visual appeal in mind. The patches of carbon are carefully cutout and placed so that the soundboard is aesthetically appealing, while maintaining the total carbon weight within tolerances. Too little carbon and you will see gaps in the pattern, too much carbon and the soundboard becomes overbuilt resulting in sound degradation.

The sound does vary from one instrument to the next, but the variation is subtle.
The quote is from this topic:

Steve, I really like the look and sound and playability of my Black Ice WS1000, too. I think they're just very cool and unique instruments, and I'd never compromise sound, tone and playability for aesthetics, but the first three were there, and the visual aspect was just frosting, so I had to go for it. I think they're really works of art. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine.

Probably the biggest surprise to me is how much I like the black ice effect. When I first saw it in pictures I thought it was a bit dumb and thought that the cleaner lines of the standard or unidirectioal would be the way to go. But when the possible trade came up I just had to go with the Black Ice cause that is what he had. Great part of life is something you would not order becomes your favorite when you see it. Really amazing in real life in a strong light. And each one is different, I like the way mine was done. (kind of edged it with the unidirectional pattern) Breaks up the "industrialness" of the gray weave. Bottom line these are great guitars no matter what top you put on. So light, deep, great separation and clarity. Two new guitars in a month, life is way too good.
