I recall reading back in the 50s, when I was but a lad and when I first felt what I now know to be GAS, that the guitar is one of the easiest instruments to learn but one of the hardest to master. At 72 I can warn all new starters that you will never be as good as you want to be no matter how great a player you become.

1. Fun is always a good idea - have some big fun every day.
2. Nobody plays as well as they would like to play.
3. Some days are diamonds, some are stones.
4. Life is too long to take yourself too seriously.

Shoot, I only pick up a guitar for several minutes at a time. I can easily fool the uninitiated, but true guitarists know better. Main thing is I only play what I want to hear, and all that stuff is pretty fun. I don't "practice."

Lucky thing for me that we of Clan Stupid can own as many guitars as we want and are not required to justify the number based upon talent or ability.

The better I get, the farther away "good" seems.

I don't let it frustrate me...I just see it as I don't ever have to be bored again.

I always say the more I learn the more I learn I don't know. I'm so glad that a lot of other people feel the same way.

Back in the 90's I spent about 5 years trying to play golf. I have been playing guitar for about as long. With about the same success rate.

Oh, well. I am having fun with it!

When I was still in grade school at some point I first heard the phrase... (the more you learn, the less you know), I didn’t understand it then, but it’s all too true to me now. Every once in a while I’ll make a step forward on guitar, but it’s always followed by the realization that I still know next to nothing. I just hope to be marginally better next week than I am this week.

Good luck,
Jeff

OP, it’s a life long process. Take heart.
But...there are ways to make progress.

May I suggest that “stupid” is not in the fingers?

Jumping to conclusions.......perhaps a credit or continuing ed course in “music theory” will get you a long way down your desired path fairly rapidly? Much more rapidly than, say, plonking away aimlessly with just fingers and ears and letting the structures and patterns emerge haphazardly.

And, for those who hear the word theory as dry torture, perhaps substituting the title “Principles of Music” should have been done years ago.

Principles of Music. Yes, that could just be the ticket.
Do(e), a deer......not so inconsequential, actually!

Best wishes to your progress!

That's why it's called "playing" music- it's supposed to be fun!
Keep working - Yo Yo Ma (the Great cellist) was asked why he still practiced every day - he said he was finally getting good (or something similar.) Keeps me trying - I will probably never get as good as I want to be on either guitar OR mandolin, but at least I am making (slow) progress!

There are a few things I can do well on the guitar. There are a multitude of things I can do poorly. There are even more things I cannot do at all.
I am grateful for the things I can do well, frustrated at the things I do poorly and
I don't worry about the things I can't do at all. That ship sailed a long time ago.

My brother was told by his guitar instructor to take some time away from studying and replace it with time just noodling around, trying new stuff and experimenting against the norm of his practice routine.

That helped his creativity and ultimately his motivation.

Sounds like my guitar playing journey.

To the OP. When you've learned how little you know, that's a big step in the right direction.
