He's probably visiting another client, spec'ing or furthering that job, and will return claiming he had to go to X-number of stores to get the exact hardware for yours.

...and if they don't complete the task to your satisfaction leave a detailed and rational review as to the reason of your negative review online with Yelp or Angie's List.
I've been screwed by too many contractors in the past. Three times come to mind and I'm currently at odds with my wife over a completely unreasonable quote for a pair of bathroom and a kitchen remodel. I've learned to do a lot of basic electrical and plumbing things myself - even going so far as to learn how to hang drywall, wainscoting and molding - not to mention painting a two story foyer. Heck, now I'm tempted to learn how to build cabinets. It's gotta be easier than luthery!
