How about a torrefied top and Madagascar Rosewood back/sides?
Neither are "authentic", are they? |

They are as authentic as humanly possible. Brazilian rosewood and the guys that made the originals just aren't as available.

As close as myself, along with many others can afford.

Guys, these are both outstanding guitars. Lots to like here. Let's see if we can keep this thread polite.

Congratulations, Lefty... I think that's a great choice. The D1A is a monster... I hope you really enjoy it. Come back and tell us all about it.

I have never owned but one Collings guitar and after 19 years, I am pretty sure there will be no need for another. It's perfect, really.

Lefty,
Congratulations. I hope it perfectly suits your taste. Having played quite a few fine acoustics, though not nearly as many as some on the forum, I've found five different models of Collings a match for my needs and taste. Unless something truly bizarre happened, you'll find the Collings a beautiful guitar made with extraordinary care. |

do the 41 d-28's still get that boomy bass or is it tighter? I have a 39A d-18 with rear bracing and it is definitely not as bassy as my standard 18. Just curious if the rosewood makes it bassier. I'm looking to add a rosewood guitar but want to make sure the 41 d28 is not too similar to my 39a with rear bracing....I know its an old thread but hoping some will chime in....thanks

Collings
Two very different guitars but if we are talking collings vs Martins my vote would go collings hands down every time. I’ve owned many by both and simply put the collings are much finer instruments

Good thing is...there are pretty good choices for different ears and preferences. Enjoy your new guitar!

If I was spending $6-$7k on a guitar, I'd be darn sure I played the things first and made my own decision rather than ask a bunch of strangers what they think.

I probably would, too, but some people just like to talk it out. I personally value the opinions of people on here very much who are much more experienced than I am, although at the end of the day I do realize that their tastes may not be my own..
that being said, I've also ordered a *few* guitars sight-unseen, never quite that pricey, but nearly so, and while I was nervous every time, I've never once been disappointed. Part of the thrill I guess. Didn't realize this was an old thread until just now, but I was surprised by just how many people chimed in saying that particular Martin was literally the best guitar they'd ever heard. I've always recognized them as great instruments, but in that price range, there is a ton of really stiff competition.. probably the #1 thing that surprised me. Still waiting for a Collings OM to come through locally to play. cheers
