I think it is a given that one needs to include dust collection in the cost of the sander.

If the plane is digging in either the depth of cut is too great, the iron tilted or you are planing against the grain. If there is any runout in the top - there usually is some - one half of the top needs to be planed in one direction and the other half the opposite direction, as determined by the runout. Planing in the wrong direction causes torn grain.
