Default Martin D-35 Johnny Cash, finish?

Hey!

I might have the privilege to test a Martin D-35 Cash tomorrow (doesn't happen very often over here in Germany :P ). I'd really like to buy this beauty, as the seller offers it for a good price, but I'm a little concerned about the high gloss black finish.
I'm buying guitars to PLAY them, not to collect them and I'd like to know, if the finish still looks good with some patina and those slight scratches, that happen in the course of time!

Are there any D-35 Johnny Cash owners on this forum ?

Sure, there's enough of us we ought to form a club! Mine is a standard, and has some distinct wear marks. Some would call them "mojo", others might call them abuse. I call them character marks, and like them because I got a great sounding guitar for a very good price because of them. If you are good to your guitar, unlike the first owner of mine, you shouldn't have any problems with its appearance down the line.

The finish is no different than other Nitro Martins, other than the guitar is black.

Ever had a black car, everything shows, strictly cosmetic, but yes smudges and haze will show more against the black background, IMO black guitars take more attention to keep them pristine, so a personal choice.

They are very nice sounding guitars......

I think the black looks very nice but I've never seen a black guitar looking great after a few years ... maybe it will go from shiny to matte...
I'd really like to see a well used D35 Johnny Cash, but can't find any pics on the net.

I think the forward shifted bracing is a great upgrade to the standard scalloped bracings.

I went down to the local GC when the D-35 JC came out thinking I needed one, (just before I became a Martin dealer) and as soon as I start playing the guitar a local rocker type comes over and starts waning me against the black finish, tells me he steers clear of black guitars because his tends to sweat on stage and the black finish will show that off. So I start thinking, I don't perform live, and only sweat when I'm working out so I decided to buy the guitar. A few years later I decided to sell it, and although I played it regularly it looked the same as the day I got it.

Sorry, no photos. As to why I sold it, Helene bought me a D-45V for my birthday which cured my Martin Dreadnought GAS. The following year was all about OM's.

I don't own one but the Martin D-35 Johnny Cash is and awesome guitar. I played one at the factory a few years back and my jaw dropped it was such a great sounding guitar. If you like articulate bass and just an amazing dynamic sound, that is the one. I only wish Martin didn't make me have to mortgage my house to get one

I think the Johnny Cash D35 is one of the nicest looking guitars with the black pieces in the abalone bindings and rosette
