no need to hide......
After 40+ years together there is nothing to "hide". If you start that way on day one of your relationship the rest of your days will flourish.

Eek.
Not a good idea to hide things from your partner. I did family law for a few years, and secret money stuff is the number one issue I saw that caused divorce, and it wasn't close. I stretched a bit to buy my HD-28, but I talked to my wife about it extensively first, and she was okay with it.

In my case, it was the opposite. My non-guitar-playing wife bought me a Martin 12 string one year for Christmas and hid it in her closet for weeks. Christmas morning came, and WHAM! Caught me by surprise - completely. A very good surprise.

You guys reminded me of an appropriate song, so here you go:
(btw, no posts from the spouses yet?)

Just stuff the case down your pants and walk casually in the door, down to your secret cave that you've spent five years digging under the basement. Easy peasy!

"I'm going to buy a new guitar"
"What kind" "It's called a Boucher" "How much is it?" "About 6K" "Okay" Like that. |

A guitar I purchased came while my wife was away. Grocery store or something. I unpacked it, put it in my music room and put the box away. I didn't tell her just to see what happens. Nothing happened. She isn't observant in that way; I buy them with my own money not our money and she doesn't care. I try not to bore her with my guitar geek talk.

My wife probably wouldn’t notice either. But, which is worse? Discussing buying a new guitar with your partner, telling her you bought it when you bring it home, or explaining it when she finds out months later that you snuck it in?
My wife only advises me, and I her. We do discuss finances and larger purchases. However, neither of us feel we have to get permission from the other to buy anything, although for we do try and make sure we are in agreement on larger purchases. |

Exact same story for me when I bought my Boucher. But then again, my wife bought herself a Yamaha P-515 digital piano at the very same time so there's that. We called it a "let's treat ourselves BIG today", day. |

Hah, my partner had just bought herself a new saddle too when I ordered mine. Except hers cost about as much as mine with the guitar included

That method should be very easy for anyone wondering how to hide stuff from their spouse. Obviously they have lots of extra room down there!

I don't hide anything.
she never objects, and I never go out on a limb to make a purchase.

I wouldn't be with someone who I had to hide guitars from. But, I've also earned trust so she really doesn't care. She knows I'm not going to do anything to put us in jeopardy. I used to tell her about each purchase and sale but she seemed to get more bored every time so I stopped bothering unless she asks.
My wife is happy that my hobby fills the house with music. When I was in the garage working on cars and bikes, that annoyed her. All my guitars together are still cheaper than one restored muscle car so there's that too. |
