Default Fingerstyle - I think I'll be able to do it!

Hi All,

Per the advice of several on this forum, I bought Hansons The Art of Contemporary Travis Picking w/ the CD. I am getting ready to head out to a jam session and I had a few minutes so I sat down and did the first lesson or so. I think I'll be able to do this!!! It's cool . . . I am excited.

Good luck in your quest. You have one of the main ingredients already - a good attitude.

I really love the Travis/Chet style of guitar. Much pleasure.

For some reason, this is really encouraging to me. I've been planning on picking up that book to learn about fingerstyle. I've been a strummer for so long that the thought of playing a completely different style is a little daunting.

Let us know how it went!

jalbert . . .what have you got to lose??? It's $19.95 I think and when I ordered it shipping was free. Then a little time . . . . Go for it? I thought it was daunting also. But simply doing that first lesson in the book was enough to tell me, with some effort and time investment, I'll be able to do it! I can't wait!

Or $15.95 with free shipping if you order the "new but scuffed" version...

Thanks!

ALRIGHT! ALRIGHT! I can't stand the temptation anymore! LOL Even though I am a flatpicker and mostly like bluegrass I caved in and sent off my check about an hour ago for the Travis book and CD.

I have read the rave reviews on this book for a long time now. So when it comes I FULLY expect to read this book ONCE and listen to the CD ONCE...Ok twice and I can expect to play like Tommy Emanuel or Stephen Bennetimmediately right??? RIGHT???

I like fingerpicking so I hope some of the book will sink into my dense head! But I'm tellin everyone RIGHT now I ain't growing my fingernails out or glueing any Lee Press on Nails!!!! I'll try it with just fingers and if that doesn't work I'll invest in some nice fingerpicks.

Me fingerpicking LOL! Next thing you know I'll be taking my hat off and dressing up when I perform on stage.

All I use is a thumbpick and just a touch of nail. IMO, fingerstyle rules!

I have a few Hanson books for Leo Kottke, and they are very good.

Wayne, I'm working on this one too. I actually bought it several months ago but didn't start up on it until recently. I discovered that, like you, I can actually do the I-O and O-I patterns. Very gratifying! My only complaint about the CD is some of the songs have vocals on them and thus the focus is the vocal and not the guitar. When you pan these songs to the left you discover that the guitar part by itself is not very interesting. I'm looking forward to getting through this set so I can start on Hanson's "Solo Fingerpicking" one which is more focused on instrumental guitar and less on ensemble playing.

The thing to remember is you got to learn to crawl before you walk, and walk before you run. The Hanson series starts you aout crawling (boring, but encouraginag because you find you can do it) and builds you up to a nice trot by the end of book 2. Well worth the time and money.
