Agree with you imwjl, the drivers of price increases are many, and complex.

Many firms I know are raising prices but can't by enough to fully cover their increased costs. It's a tough business environment, and even tougher for us consumers!

Sorry, I don't have time to post a reply, gotta go to the store & pick up a few 36-packs of toilet paper.

No such thing as enough preparation for the apocalypse!

Since day one we've always stockpiled non-perishables/paper goods/cleaning supplies, so when the first wave of panic buying hit a couple years ago (gee, has it really been that long... ) we were able to hold out until the supply chain reopened; FWIW maybe it's the local demographic, but for some strange reason there's been a recent run on cream cheese here in the Tri-State area - just waiting for the bagel shortage to follow (BTW got a dozen of those in the freezer, just in case )...

We generally shop at Publix and there are always bare or almost bare shelves. Some of it is panic buying/hoarding but some is the result of thousands of tourists coming here for the winter. The usual larger orders for “season “ just aren’t being filled like before.

When I was getting ready to retire, I read a number of books and articles that talked about the high costs associated with working: commuting costs (which are huge: a minimum of 56 cents a mile) clothing, child care, costs associated with feeling time pressure (buying a burrito instead of making a sandwich at home, buying coffee rather than making coffee). I think some people realized that making some modest (or in some case, drastic) cuts in their spending meant they could live with less income and have a better quality of life: maybe one parent stays home now instead of both working, maybe a person works one or two part time jobs instead of three, etc, etc.

They haven't mentioned a hurricane yet here in Florida. Then we'll see some real panic buying.

My sister used to live out on the farm we grew up on. In the winter when there was a blizzard coming she would run into town here and stock up for a month. The blizzard would hit over night, they would get plowed out in the afternoon, then they would drive into town to see how much snow we got, hang around at mom and dad's place, and go out for Mexican. She moved into town ten years ago and still runs to the store to stock up if a blizzard is coming. She lives a mile from the store.

The morning and afternoon on new years eve day make the check out lines at the liquor stores an epic thing to see.

My grandson works at a local one, they hire ppl to direct traffic in the parking lots to keep the meltdowns to a minimum

I guess the idea of going there like a few days before (which we typically do if we are planning something) is just out of the question.

we are a strange bunch..

Always get a kick out of the plywood sales.
Every single big storm our TV will show folks pounding up fresh sheets of plywood.
Sometimes think, why not cut, paint and reuse them?
Hmm, possible side hustle?

I've come to enjoy any shortages or temporary outages. I baulk at paying really high prices when they have gone up fifty and one hundred percent. I have found I don't need what I wanted. There's always another way about things and taking a new path is a nice adventure.

Often wondered the same, I can only guess it’s storage or new owners since the last big storm?
