Default NGD : Larrivee D40

Okay, so I have a Martin D18, but it has wide nut for fingerstyle. I have a Taylor 314, wide nut again! I have a J45, but it slope shoulder growl is lost with its Rosewood B/S (mine is not the hog).

I wanted full snappy bass with a 1 and 1/16 nut width so I can move faster on the neck with less effort but not lose the cannon thump I treasure in my Martin.

Enter the Larrivee D40. Now, in Canada, Larrivee sales are going down, the demand is high for Taylor and Martin and Gibson. So poor Larrivee is getting harder to find, like 1 or 2 models at our local shops, sad...

I went in 3 times to the store and played it.....took it home and love it.

The D40 does not have the bass of a Martin nor the trebly ring of the Taylor. Its balanced. When you want bass, you get it. Its response to dynamics is off the charts.

This is one fine guitar and I am shocked that it is so hard to find in music stores these days.

Awesome, congrats! My dream guitar the last couple years bounced around a Larrivee D40 and a Guild D40, my wife surprised me last year with the Guild for my birthday. Both have the 1 11/16 nuts which I love. The Larrivee has a bit more real-estate at the bridge which is nice. I still love those Larrivee D40s, excellent choice. I think Larrivee leaving Canada may have something to do with the slow decline in popularity here, a part of me died that day as a Canadian, but their guitars are still just as good.

I still have a goal of buying a used Canadian made Larrivee, maybe an OM-03R, just to own some Canadian legacy, might have to sell me Yamaha and S&P to do that though.

Congrats. Larrivee dreads are great. Love my D-19’s tone and 28 yo and never had an issue. Enjoy yours for many years.

I doubt that “Larrivee sales in Canada are going down.” I’ve recently been in touch with Larrivee, and like most guitar manufacturers, they can hardly keep up with demand. Larrivees have always been difficult to find. I live in the San Francisco area, and I don’t know of any store that actually stocks Larrivees. Of my 4 Larrivees, the only one I bought new is my JCL 40th Anniversary Edition, which I picked up right from Jean’s hands at the Oxnard shop.
Congrats on finding the D40. I’ve never even seen a 40 series Larrivee down here.

Davis, congrats on the Larrivee! Gotta love the Legacy series.

I was at L&M at the end of Nov and again at the end of Dec. There were 2-3 Larrivees in Nov and none in stock after Christmas. They are selling, just not staying in stock long.

A fine guitar! I don’t think they stay in stores very long.

Love my D-40 it was the gateway drug to my OO-40.
I'm surprised more people don't own them.

I have two D40R and one D40W....Incredible sound! And I think A D40 mahogany is next up.
Just give your guitar about three or four months of heavy playing...It will open up and be a real beast.
