It's off to finish now. The last step was to apply the Smurf skin fretboard surface treatment. This unusual treatment makes the fretboard hard as stone, smooth as silk, and really resonant.

Ray hunts and skins his own Smurfs in the wilds of Oregon. Ray feels that fretboards with this treatment feel Smurfing awesome.

This is a very cool build! I also just built myself a jig to start doing dovetail necks again, is this Ray's current approach or is this something you specified, Juston? It also looks like he's using just one carbon stringer on the treble side to allow more relief in the bass side of the fretboard. Kent Chasson does something similar, he uses a shorter rod in the bass side. Very cool stuff, I think I'll experiment with it as well very soon.

Thanks for sharing!

I'm not real certain on Ray's approach to necks. We didn't discuss the details. He made all the decisions about the joint and reinforcement. Despite my years of experience reading posts on the AGF, he didn't seek my counsel. Crazy.

Haha! I just wondered if you were one of the favorers of the dovetail and had requested it. Good to know, though. Thanks for replying.

Nah, I'm pretty much neutral on those kind of issues. I prefer to leave that up to the luthier.

It really does allow the innate voice of the guitar to come through.

Really beautiful overall, and I particularly like the headstock.

That is awesome Juston! It really has a physical presence. If it was me I'd also be getting some cool new clothes, in black, so that I could look the part when I played it!

I will only wear black leather from now on. (I will of course install polish cloths at the appropriate contact points to keep everything in tip-top condition. On a side note, I have been contemplating making some clothes out of micro-fiber material and marketing them as Guitar Pyjamas: when anal isn't anal enough.)
