Just for pure fun of playing on guitar, I'd say "Don't Think Twice, It's Alright".

I dont know and couldnt choose his GREATEST song cause I like so many, and hate even more, but Mr. Tambourine Man Live at the Newport Folk Festival, 1964 grabs me every time I hear it so it might be my favorite, at least today.

I was an absolute Dylan fanatic during my high school years. It's really impossible, though, for me to pick just one best song. That said, 'My Back Pages' seemed especially relevant to me during those years of teenage rebellion. Here are the lyrics

Impossible for me to pick a best so I'll just mention a couple of my faves that haven't been mentioned yet. Boots of Spanish Leather and Farewell, Angelina. I also always enjoy singing You Ain't Goin' Nowhere.

The thing about really great songs is they they have an appeal that is both unique and universal
The thing about really great songwriters is they can accomplish this in a number of different types and styles of songs and the accomplish great prosody in the process. Dylan was so good at that.....as many have noted picking one, is not only difficult but a arguably pointless. From the :as Bluenote mentioned My Back Pages with the unique captivating and intriguing lyrics and then the simple yet profound repeating two line end phrase " Ah, but I was so much older then, I'm younger than that now." To the : simple but haunting Knocking on Heavens Door ...... the man was clearly a genius at songwriting ..

So many great songs to choose from, but since no one's mentioned it yet, I'm going to propose "Visions of Johanna." Amazing lyrics, amazing vocal, amazing musical backing.

Well, well, well, so I can die easy Well, well, well Well, well, well, so I can die easy Jesus gonna make up, Jesus gonna make up Jesus gonna make up my dying bed Lord, in my time of dying, don't want nobody to cry All I want you to do is take me when I die Well, well, well, so I can die easy Well, well, well Well, well, well, so I can die easy Jesus gonna make up, Jesus gonna make up Jesus gonna make up my dying bed:-)

Things Have Changed - Bob Dylan A worried man with a worried mind No one in front of me and nothing behind There's a woman on my lap and she's drinking champagne Got white skin, got assassin's eyes I'm looking up into the sapphire tinted skies I'm well dressed, waiting on the last train Standing on the gallows with my head in a noose Any minute now I'm expecting all hell to break loose People are crazy and times are strange I'm locked in tight, I'm out of range I used to care, but things have changed This place ain't doing me any good I'm in the wrong town, I should be in Hollywood Just for a second there I thought I saw something move Gonna take dancing lessons do the jitterbug rag Ain't no shortcuts, gonna dress in drag Only a fool in here would think he's got anything to prove Lot of water under the bridge, Lot of other stuff too Don't get up gentlemen, I'm only passing through I've been walking forty miles of bad road If the bible is right, the world will explode I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can Some things are too hot to touch The human mind can only stand so much You can't win with a losing hand Feel like falling in love with the first woman I meet Putting her in a wheel barrow and wheeling her down the street I've been walking forty miles of bad road If the bible is right, the world will explode I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can Some things are too hot to touch The human mind can only stand so much You can't win with a losing hand I hurt easy, I just don't show it You can hurt someone and not even know it The next sixty seconds could be like an eternity Gonna get low down, gonna fly high All the truth in the world adds up to one big lie I'm love with a woman who don't even appeal to me Mr. Jinx and Miss Lucy, they jumped in the lake I'm not that eager to make a mistake I've been walking forty miles of bad road If the bible is right, the world will explode I've been trying to get as far away from myself as I can Some things are too hot to touch The human mind can only stand so much You can't win with a losing hand

One of my most favorite songs in the whole world, certainly my favorite Dylan song, is "Boots of Spanish Leather". Sad choice, but it speaks to me. I also love the more upbeat "Subterranean Homesick Blues"

Quote:
Visions of Johanna Mr. Tambourine Man It’s Alright Ma As a player, gosh, I’m into fun and cannot handle that kind of word count. Don’t Think Twice Knocking on Heaven’s Door Buckets of Rain Mostly redundant to other posts, but there you have it.

Don't think twice rises to the top for me, and the most fun to play. But Blowin in the Wind and The Times they Are a Changin because they were such seminal works. Subterranean, because its just so cool, Johnnys in the basement mixin up the medicine, and hidden in his newer catalogue is Jokerman, love that tune.
