True, making it important to view a variety of sources, think critically, and make up your own mind.
This is better than sticking to news sources that just reinforce one's biases.

Thomas Jefferson said, "An informed citizenry is at the heart of a dynamic democracy."

But today with the Internet it's too easy to overload on news, and "news".
This is good advice. It's important to remain informed, and some topics are critical for our family to remain engaged. But moderation is the key, as the information (and misinformation) online can quickly become consuming. I have some sites bookmarked, checked out what I needed, and proceeded to tune out on this hot Sunday afternoon and evening.

Stay safe, stay sane. Play guitar.

Whatever happened to bad news resulting in alert informed citizens taking action to make thing better?

Head-in-the-sand-comfortable citizens ignoring certain bad news is exactly what some people want.

I stopped paying attention to any news sources at the start of 2019. No social media since 2016. When the COVID-19 thing kicked off, I tuned back into domestic news for occasional updates. Now I'm tuning out again. There is little going on in the world that I have the power or the desire to change. My duty is to my loved ones and I'm a better and more attentive brother, son and boyfriend when I stay out of the maddening loop.

Don't you/we also have a duty to the wider circle of brothers and sisters? "Our human family"? That is what I was taught, and that is why I continue to practice the discipline of staying informed, and not withdrawing to a more comfortable, self-cherishing perch. To quote Martin Luther King, Jr.:

"We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly. I can never be what I ought to be until you are what you ought to be. This is the interrelated structure of reality."

If you find that too difficult and it goes against the grain, don’t do it. I completely understand and it is your free choice. No criticism will come from me.
Why not allow those of us who find peace in abstaining have our free choice with some understanding as well. It’s all good.
I reposted this.
My goodness it was just a suggestion to try for one day!
Some of the responses would seem to indicate it was a good suggestion.
Last time I looked, the sun came up this morning.
Have a great day all.

Didn’t consider my post as “heavy”. More in the realm of “thinking in different categories” was what I was aiming for. Sorry if my thoughts “harsh your mellow”.

I also wish you and everyone else Visiting this read a great day.

You didn’t harsh anything and no one was being “singled out.”
I just wanted everyone to keep the original intent of the post in mind.

Didn't feel singled out, but thought it my apply to me, and therefore offered an apology. We all know how one's internal tone and the nuances of one's perspective can be lost when writing, and thought an apology couldn't hurt.

So, to help me get clear, was the original intent to encourage people to take a one day vacation from reading the news yesterday?

Come on, guys. The original intent of this thread was well-meaning. Some of us will take the OP's suggestion and some won't. It's OK to disagree, but we don't need to convince others why they might be wrong. Just politely state your opinion and move on.
