My top lost love song is James Tayler's "Her Town Too" because it mirrored the break up of my first marriage in the early '80s.

"You've Got To Hide Your Love Away" is still on my play list, though we do a version closer to what The Silkie did.

"Southern Cross" is also good.

Lots of great songs already listed. Some others I haven’t seen mentioned yet:

Falling Slowly - Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova from the movie Once, which fits this category very well
Farewell, Wedding Day - Rosie Thomas
Jolene - Ray Lamontagne

After 13 hours of "The Bridge" on XM radio this weekend I give the prize to Mr. Lobo. Road trip with my wife. She knows what she likes

"You Are My Sunshine" is ubiquitous. The title alone would make you think it is a happy song. It is not. It is a song of betrayal and lost love.

I think it's likely most love songs, or most people's favorite love songs are "lost love songs." Funny if that's so, it's it?

A personal favorite, and slightly different take on lost love would be Tom T. Hall's "Pamela Brown" as sung and played by Leo Kottke.

Great songwriting, excellent performance. I could muse on why more people don't play bottleneck slide 12-string, but having tried it, I know why--it's difficult.

On the electric side. . . did anyone mention Gary Moore yet? "Still Got the Blues For You" is an all time favorite lost love song.

David Gates' Everything I Own is about his deceased father. Not a lost romantic love.

I knew that, but it's still describes the pain of losing a loved one.
