The Who
So I'm planning a late September vacation to Colorado and Wyoming. Letsee...what to do, what to do? When up on my Facebook timeline pops an advertisement for The Who playing Denver when we're there.
Boom! I got tickets and am going to finally see a band I've wanted to see for the last half century. They're not at Red Rocks, but you can't get everything you want, right?

I’ve seen them three times plus I saw Daltrey open for Clapton once. My favorite band. I had to beg my mom to let me go to the first one back in 1982(?). I was 15. You’ll love it.

Bought my dad and I tickets for his birthday to see them at the Hollywood Bowl here in LA. They're his favorite band and by default became mine as well. Keith Moon's drumming is what got me into music when I was listening to those records growing up. Been trying to see them for years and it's never worked, can't wait for October.

I would have wanted to 20 or more years ago but not now. What are they now, 80? Prefer to preserve my memory of them.

I really wanted to go see Tom Petty
...when he came to Austin...was it last year? I didn't go. I'll always regret that.
I'm also going to see the B52s this week. I don't want to keep putting off what shouldn't be put off.

The first time I saw the Who was in 1967 which was their first tour of the States. But without Moonie and The Ox it is just not the same.

Going to have to back track on that statement. My friend saw them on their last tour and said they were amazing. Shows what I know.

The Who were revolutionary in their influence upon melodic rock.
Townsend holds a unique place in acoustic guitar history with his incredible combination of heavy strumming, interwoven with outstanding single note melodies.. Daltry once said that every time he sings a song...he sings it as if it was the first time he was signing it. It puts everything into it. No one can sing Townsend's compositions better than Daltry. The two were made for each other. I love most all music. From Classical, Country & Western, Folk, new wave, Alternative and rock. But I especially hold a great fondness for the Beatles, Rolling Stones, The Moody Blues and The Who. The song that I never tire of playing and singing, my desert Island Song? "Behind Blue Eyes" Powerful lyrics & meaning. It goes from sweet soft acoustic, to heart pounding rhythms and somehow it all makes sense. Enjoy! |

I've seen them twice in the last 5 years or so. Both great concerts, Townsend still plays like a beast and Daltry still belts it out like in the old days. Second concert, Pete got angry, left the stage mid perfomance, Daltry finished the show. Never seen that before.

Kenney Jones was a great addition, but with Keith Moon and Entwistle now gone, Are they still the Who?

The obvious answer is no.

I would say
...that given that most songs were written and/or sung by Pete and Roger, then the largest creative chunk of the band is still in tact. Both other players were key to their sound, and exceptional in their own right. But their efforts can be mimic'd.
This is the song I'm probably most looking forward to hearing, from back in the era I'd like to have heard it. Lots of fury here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ODKZGBrAtxY

Saw them in the mid 70's with Moon. Nice, except I was the only one sitting at the end.
Saw them a couple years ago and it was the best rock show that I have been to in more than a decade. It was a dress rehearsal, warm up show (at The Santa Barbara Bowl) for the geezers in the desert weekend 3 day event. Truly amazing on all fronts. One of those concerts that sticks with you for a few days. At one point Pete boldly called out to the youth. Something like this is how it's done. Not too many bands could get away with that bravado. Except on that night it was not hyperbole, it was Pete throwing down a fact and a call to arms. |

Daltrey and Townshend can obviously still play great music, but in my opinion, no, it's not The Who... As in: "There will be no Beatles reunion as long as John Lennon remains dead..." George Harrison, 1989
