Default Old song, new camera

I fell for the slack key version of "Silver Threads Among the Gold" the first time I heard it. The song was copyrighted in 1873, and sold huge numbers of sheet music copies. The late Leonard Kwan created the original slack key arrangement, and Ledward Kaapana developed his own version. Mine is based on both of theirs, and on the vocal version from 1913 by tenor, John McCormack.

This is the first video shot with my new Panasonic Lumix GH2. The audio was captured on the Zoom Q3HD, you can see the little black blob in the lower right corner of the main performance shot. The closeup of the picking hand is video from the Q, the rest is from the GH2. I'm still in learner mode with this new camera, and with color grading in post, but it sure is fun trying to figure this stuff out.

Another great video, great music, and another learning experience for us...

Thanks, Fran.

Thanks for posting Fran - lovely as usual and it does look like you found a fine video camera for crisp images to go with your stellar playing.

Best,
Jayne

You mention a lot about the video in this recording which I admit, is just great, but so is the audio. I kind of feel like I'm sitting 3 feet in front of your guitar and it's a terrific fully encompassing sound. No doubt, some of it is the low tuning, and a lot of it is your oh-so-nice playing, but there also seems to be some 'secret ingredient' as well.

My complements all around --

Edit:: By the way, when trying to post a comment on the youtube site for your video, I get an error "Error: Try Again" . Not important, perhaps youtube is in a bad mood today.

Beautiful, beautiful playing. And it seems like such a simple song to play. If only I could learn to fingerpick.

The video was awesome as well. I loved the intro of you preparing to play. And of course, the wry smile at the end.

Thanks, everyone. All I can see are the flaws and missed opportunities, of course, so all the kind words are gratefully received.

I had a lot of fun trying to get the best from the GH2 (and failing). But I was very pleasantly surprised by the audio and video from the Zoom Q3HD. You can see a black blob in the lower right corner of the main shot - that's the Q windscreen, a little under 2 feet from the lower bout of the guitar.

For the audio I used a high pass filter at about 110 hz, bumped the volume up by about 9 db and used the reverb plugin from Jason Breebart's new Toneboosters line of VSTs. http://www.toneboosters.com/ I put the clip together in Edius Neo 2.5, which supports VST audio plugins.
