Default Changing nuts

Can I change my guitar from 1 3/4 to 1 11/16 the or does the nut need to be the same size it was originally built with?

You can change the nut, sure. But the neck's width, remaining what it is, may leave you with an awkward-feeling neck at the first few frets: the narrower 11/16" nut along with its string spacing with extra space on either end of the hi/lo E strings. Not sure what you'd really be accomplishing with a narrower nut except giving yourself tighter confines without a narrower neck.

You certainly can, though you will have spaces on either end of the nut slot and it wont be flush with the edge of the fretboard.
What are you trying to accomplish? a narrower string spacing? That can be done with a 1 3/4 nut too.
