I get best reaction from:

Signed, D.C.--Love
Phantasmagoria In Two--Tim Buckley
Hesitation Blues--Hot Tuna
Love Minus Zero\No Limit--Bob Dylan

Of course, the reactions have been from four cats, my wife, four wonderful people whom I met through this forum, when we got together to jam, and about a dozen people in a coffee house who didn't have anything better to do once upon a time on a Sunday night...!

(Er, not necessarily in that order!!)

Doctor My Eyes by Jackson Browne. I used to have that one so well copied, vocally and otherwise, with my buddy in college doing the harmony and playing bongo, that I had someone tell me they thought it was playing on the radio. I wasn't sure if it was a good thing. I just decided to take it that way.

For me and for some reason no matter where I play it, I get comments on COMIN' TO LOS ANGELES by Arlo Guthrie. People are always telling me haven't heard that tune for 20+ years.

For me, it's gotta be "Travling Soldier" by the Dixie Chicks or "Ironic" by Alanis.

Whenever I play Travling Soldier I get one of three reactions, tears, loud cheers at the end(I have made it my own, and gave it a more dramatic ending, vocally) or VERY hearty Boos - being in Texas some people still haven't forgiven Natalie.

Ironic, ...Well, have you ever been to a karaoke bar and heard someone sing it? ...Or just heard the opening music? Cringe, in fear right? Well most do that when I start playing it too.. It builds until the chorus and then complete SHOCK when they discover I can hit the high notes with power and I don't sound like a strangled cat!! I love to play it acoustic, but my FAVORITE is to play it at Karaoke bars. TOO fun. After that usually about 5 or 6 people will come up and ask me to do a duet with them and more will come up and tell me they'd learn to hate that song, and I made them love it again. lol.

Well. I never play in public and all my songs are covers. So I'm not sure this thread is for me.

But I'll tell you what tune my cats (my only audience) dig the most: "Out on the Weekend" - Neil Young.

Hey Anthony! Me too! Mini hates the guitar but Benny loves it when I play Daisy (A Bicycle Built For Two). I change the words tho' and play it to the melody of Daisy...

Benny Benny
You are a fuzzy boo
I'm half crazy
All for the love of you
You've always got poop on your bum
But you're just so much fun
And you'll look sweet,
Spraying the seat
Of a very expensive couch!

(I know, it doesn't rhyme)

Have I lost all credibility now?

I sing to my cats too: Matthew gets "Matthew Man" to the tune of "Macho Man," and to the tune of Toni Basil's "Mickey:"
Oh, Matty you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind
Hey Matty. Hey Matty.....

And Heidi gets the scat refrain from Cab Calloway's "Minnie the Moocher" (no lyric changes necessary).

Everyone I know with cats sings to them. Weird, huh?

Sandy, somewhere on the 'net there is/was a website of songs that people sing exclusively to their cats! I found it once (it's hilarious) but haven't been able to find it for awhile now (maybe it's since been deleted). Anyway, we're not alone!!!

People use to get a real kick out of hearing me play Tempted, by Squeeze. I think it was just a gas to hear it done with just a guitar and vocal.

Hey, I sing to my animals too. Expect it's usually my dogs.. I've even written a song especially for one of my dear dog show friends based on the dogs in his kennel and kennel name/story.. yeah, I'm weird - so what!

I don't think it's weird at all. What would be weird, IMO, if your dogs would respond with howling and by clapping paws.

bryan adams - summer of 69

I sing to our four cats, but they rarely acknowledge it...however, my wife, who can barely carry a tune, just whistles the theme from "Cats", and the one she's calling comes--every time---they just know? (Twilight Zone theme in background)
