Default McKnight customer is the good sister.

Meet Teri. She stands with a smile here as she is showing the guitar she purchased during the McJam 2022 for her sister, Marcia. Think about this for a moment. Teri must be the good sister. Don't be fooled. Teri had another slick thought in mind. Her sister didn't know she was going to be the owner. The picture is a tease because Teri held this guitar first. This way there can always be that little bit of grit between these two girls. Somehow Teri still gets the title of being the good sister! I think my mom should have adopted her!

Our customer/friends had never seen this guitar before. It was actually being built for the 2023 Artisan Guitar show in Harrisburg, PA, but Tim didn't want to chance displaying this guitar that was promised to a local customer. We prefer to display guitars at shows where a customer will be attending and taking home from the show.

Though she is having her first custom built McKnight guitar Teri is also the owner of the McKnight Aquarius guitar that was displayed at the Woodstock show a few years ago. Some of you will remember that guitar as our booth was busy with flowers going to the "flower child" by-passers and several of you came by and sang the song Aquarius with me. Teri should have been there that weekend! We could have talked about about the '60's.

Tim will begin the McKnight Angel AGF thread soon so you all can see what he is up to. Teri will be watching the thread. Please encourage her to participate and tell about her experiences with 2022 McJammers. Teri and Marcia have known me since elementary school. She knows far more about the quirky Maryisms than any of you need to know.

Anyhow, Teri and Marcia will be attending the 2023 McJam. If you plan to come please keep an eye on the events section of the AGF or let Tim or me know your plans. We sure hope to have our regulars return again. YOU make the McJam what it is. Always a joy to share the fun.

Teri and Tim with that Brazilian Rosewood guitar being held by Teri before Marcia knew it was hers.

Teri playing her McKnight Aquarius guitar

This is Marcia. During the McJam she said she wants to live at our house so she can have a McKnight guitar. She didn't even know her sister's plan at that time.

Tim has decided to keep this as the post for the Angel guitar. he and I will post the pictures of Teri's custom build here. So, here we go.

Deacon model
Back wood - PauRosa
Top - 1950 Redwood
Double sides - Cherry inside
Angels of ivory keys which is all that remains from her grandpa's antique piano

Cherry is the inner section of the double sides

Spritzing the sides to be built. This was done at McJam 2022. Our famous customer and photographer is Kathy Frantz. She and Rodger (behing her) help me coordinate the McJams. Side note: Rodger has attended all 15 McJams without fail.

McJammers get to watch Tim do something in the shop so they have front row view of a guitar process. Here Tim is explaining the heating process so the McJammers know facts about the time frame of bending woods. Most of you know Tim prefers to have double sides on all McKnight guitars. Great stability.

The process of bending the sides is a little more intriguing that the bystanders are displaying in their facial features. I glad I can pick on McJammers.

Might need to guess Tim is making a vow to do his duty?

All these people had the chance to watch the sides of the Angel guitar being built.

Today Tim removed those sides from the bender and he has glued the first set of sides to become one.

Applying glue to the sides

Sometimes we don't have enough hands!

Ready to "marry" the sides to become one.

The sides go into the bender to set over night

Speed is the key so the sides stay in the proper place before the glue gets to tacky.

Tim, Mary, I always enjoy touring vicariously through your shop. Thanks for the pics. One of these days we’ll get up to Ohio for the real deal.
Hey—looks like you’re running low on the Kinnaird Guitars booby-prize T-shirts.
Must remedy that.

We were all intrigued by the side bending demo at McJam. It was even more fun because we got to meet Teri and stand by her as it happened. Good on you Teri for making this wonderful gesture!

Steve, YOU do need to gather shirts and send them our way for the McJam next year. We will pick a perfect time to get a candid shot. Save the shipping. I'll smile when you deliver them personally, be it at the Artisan guitar show or the McJam. You are welcome to come meet the gang!

Repeat of yesterday on the other set of sides

Scraping dried glue from the back

Sanding the double sides

Cutting the shape of the back

Someone is goofing off - Wanna guess who?

Tim begins to make braces for "My Angel's guitar. Usually he has enough of these on hand. Along with braces Tim is cutting the rosette segments out of the same back scrap. It's my job to assemble these. Because there were extra pieces cut out I will assemble 2 extra rosettes just in case one gets feisty and breaks. If they all survive I will hang the extras in the wood room for other possible projects.

Say Hi to this old gal who is doing her rosette assemble. Which one will I choose to glue together?

So I am so excited! I love the curves in the “small” of the Angel’s back. The Pau Rosa is going to turn out more beautiful than I imagined. I selected the materials based upon the sound, so I know this Angel will sound like heaven once completed. Thanks guys!

You have the advantage that many would like to have. You are less than 2 hours from us and are in the vicinity often. You were able to hand pick your choice of woods in a personal visit. Some 2 plus time customers have many hours of driving or a day of flights to get here.

We know you desire a clean simplistic design to honor your grandpa. Having known your family since we were kiddos I am honored to be doing this with you!

Today the boss and I work on rosettes. I am his quality control and he is mine.

Sides are cut to proper length

The neck and tail blocks will be measured and glued in place. If you have questions please do ask. Others will have the same questions and we can answer here.

Tim hand traces the Deacon (size) guitar. This shows him exactly where to remove the sound hole. The rosette will be placed on the top before the shape of the guitar is cut. That will be done another day.

This is the rosette created from your back. Each one had a little character but i am keeping in mind that your desire is the simplistic to better pronounce your grandpa's piano keys.

Rough setting of rosette placement

The router puts a "negative" for the rosette inlay

Sometimes we are asked about tools. This shot is for those of you who understand this one.

The inlay process is done in a timely manner. Glue sets up quickly.

And now the rosette is in place, but to stay in place Tim applies a weight (maybe 40 pounds) to be sure there is no separation or uprising. Yes... this is my husband standing on your guitar top. I can promise you he will never do that again and he highly suggests nobody else ever do this.

My Angel, you will see there are more pictures on the "other" account. Over time this site will have many pictures. My thanks to the (past and present) moderators Cigarfan and T'BSox who helped me learn how to add pictures in this forum.

These build threads are always a treat - especially when you get to be there for the inception. How long does it take start to finish for a build nowadays and do you charge people rent if they offer to move in?
