Prepping hard for an upcoming archtop gig...
I played on a soon to be released album by Tim Rushlow & His Big Band last year. This album had some of the best talent around on it. Why I was part of it is still a mystery to me. Tim has sold over 11 million albums in his career (but he is a humble guy who regularly flies into the front lines in the middle east to entertain the troops - sometimes just him & his guitar in a tent with a handful of special forces guys). The 13 piece horn section was filled with guys who tour and record with the likes of Paul Simon, Prince, Elton John, etc. and the rhythm section wasn't too shabby either. Paul Leim was on drums.
I also did a live gig with this band last year and it was an absolute blast. It's an unbelievable experience to get to comp a zillion jazz chords on my L-5 on these great arrangements with such great musicians. Now Tim is lining up some gigs for this year and has asked me to play. The first gig is a small jazz combo (bass, drums, keys, guitar, sax, and Tim) in a swanky Nashville venue. I'm prepping more than usual for this one. In a big band setting, the rhythm guitar is not really our front in the mix. But in this small combo - with Paul Leim looking over my shoulder - I'll be right there for all to hear. And these charts are a bit like calculus and some of them are FAST (280 BPM). Needless to say, I don't want to do a belly flop off the high dive in front of everyone at the pool so I'm running these tunes until I can play them in my sleep. It's gigs like this - that take a bit of courage to do - in which I've experienced the most growth from as a musician. |

My left hand aches just looking at all those chord changes!
Good luck to you! |

Obviously you are very good yet you have led yourself into an environment that is "threatening" enough to energize you to be even better. That's a very cool place to be.

Nice chart! It could be much tougher, you could get all that on a handwritten scrap of paper!

Those rapid chord changes are even more daunting when you need to find voicings that complement what the keyboardist is doing.

Man, charts like that drive me nuts. I'd want to rewrite that chart and remove all the unnecessary extensions.

Are you able to tell us when that first gig is and what the Nashville venue is?

You'll come out of that gig a better player! Necessity is the mother of invention.
