Default For those who say Yngwie Malmsteen is just shred

Wrong.....check this out. He starts with nylon string, then dishes out the ultimate archetype of metal....

Great guitarist but I'm not a fan of his acoustic tone, way too compressed and processed. I think somebody should show Yngwie a dictionary entry of the word dynamic

It sounded like shredding on a classical guitar to me.

I love heavy metal. I love hard rock. I love 80's hair bands.

I saw him in concert and he was dreadful.

This hasn't changed my mind.

gee, giving a great guitarist a hard time. Personally I listen to the arpeggios he moves thru so fluidly, thru multiple chord changes.
The classical start does not compliment his style and it does sound thin, can blame the sound engineer on that point (imo)... but that axe he moves too shows his trade mark sound / tone.
If anyone can breakdown his right / left hand movement then you likely know your theory fairly well

I wouldn't say he can't play, I just don't want to listen to it.

He plays his style with a speed and accuracy that no one here can duplicate. The sound on the classical was piezo all the way with super low string setup buzzing. His choice in the guitar he played and it's tone does not reflect on a playing ability limitation.

Like his hair style, his playing style gives him his audience - makes him stand out. You either like that style of music or move on - criticisms unnecessary.

I wonder why he arouses such strong opinions from other acoustic guitarists? I agree that he is not what I would listen to on the treadmill through headphones. But his accuracy, fretboard knowledge, ability to pioneer the fusion of classical and rock, speed and dynamics while playing at speed are astounding by any measure. I put this up to inspire you to match his skill, to push your playing to the next level. Also, my acoustic work is all hard rock, and if you browse youtube, almost no one is doing it. There are maybe 5 videos up of impressive acoustic lead work on the acoustic. I would like to see more players embracing it. So despite the sometimes searing critiques of rock artists, I do continue to post them, cuz I know some folks like em.

Some comments, and I say this with a gentle poke to the ribs, remind me of Mr. Wilson yelling at Dennis the Menace, listening to his first Beatle's album.

I hate to say it, but some of criticism I have heard in this thread and others on Yngwie, well, it sounds like a grand dad railing at his son's first Beatles album.

You're surprised people don't like it? I'd be like me posting a thread praising Snoop Dogg on a country music forum. His material is so far removed from the demographic here that it's pointless to even bother. Also, he shouldn't be allowed to use Phrygian modes anymore. Someone should just remove that series of intervals from his brain..

Nowhere in there did you use the word "music".

I agree Yngwie Malmsteem (and Steve Vai and countless others) are technical masters. They can move their fingers over the fretboard with astonishing speed and accuracy. But, I never get a sense of "musicality" from them.

I also dislike the singing style of Christina Aguelera, Mariah Carey and the like. They are technically gifted and can make notes with incredibly speed and accuracy. But every song sounds like an ear-exhausting scales-exercise.

Back to guitarists....

With players like Yngwie Malmsteem, every song sounds like a 3 minute guitar solo. Every album a collection of a dozen guitar solos. Every concert a 2-hour guitar solo. No musical moderation.

It's like a cup of coffee with five pounds of sugar added........where's the coffee? And if I drink five pounds of sugar I'll get sick to my stomach. That's how my ears feel when I listen to Yngwie.
